A thermotropic biaxial nematic liquid crystal

TLDR
In this paper, optical studies have been carried out on a nematogenic copper complex, which incorporates the features of both rod-like and disk-like molecules, and conoscopic figures have been presented demonstrating the occurrence of a biaxial nematic phase in the pure complex, the uniaXial-biaxial (Na-Nb) transition in binary mixtures, and the temperature variation of the biaaxiality near this transition.
Abstract
Optical studies have been carried out on a nematogenic copper complex, which incorporates the features of both rod-like and disk-like molecules. Conoscopic figures are presented demonstrating (i) the occurrence of a biaxial nematic phase in the pure complex, (ii) the uniaxial-biaxial (Na-Nb) transition in binary mixtures, and (iii) the temperature variation of the biaxiality near this transition. The I-Na-Nb phase diagram has been studied for the binary system.

Dalton perspectives. The synthesis and properties of metal-containing liquid-crystal systems: what can the metal do for you?

TL;DR: In this paper, some of the general phenomena associated with liquid-crystal behavior are introduced before selective consideration is given to the effect which a metal can have when it forms part of a liquidcrystalline molecule.

Deuterium NMR investigation of the biaxial nematic phase in an organosiloxane tetrapode.

TL;DR: Deuterium NMR is used to examine the molecular order exhibited by an organosiloxane tetrapode giving the first experimental evidence, using a bulk sample, for the existence of a biaxial nematic phase in this type of compounds.

Dynamics of electro-optical switching processes in surface stabilized biaxial nematic phase found in bent-core liquid crystal

TL;DR: In this paper, the dynamics of electro-optical switching processes in the biaxial nematic phase of an oxadizole-based bent-core liquid crystal (LC) was studied.

Topological defects in schlieren textures of biaxial and uniaxial nematics.

TL;DR: Monte Carlo and theoretical studies of thin 3D films of biaxial and uniaXial nematics with tangential boundary conditions show distinct differences in structure and evolution of topological defects, of relevance for the current debate on the existence of bIAxial phases.

The topological theory of defects in ordered media

TL;DR: Aspects of the theory of homotopy groups are described in a mathematical style closer to that of condensed matter physics than that of topology in this paper, where the focus is on mathematical pedagogy rather than on a systematic review of applications.

Observation of a Biaxial Nematic Phase in Potassium Laurate-1-Decanol-Water Mixtures

TL;DR: In this article, the ternary system potassium laurate-1-decanol-D${2}\mathrm{O}$ was studied over concentration ranges where nematic phases are likely to occur.

Ordered phases of a liquid of biaxial particles

TL;DR: In this article, a simple model for an interacting liquid of particles lacking an axis of rotational symmetry is proposed, and the four order parameters necessary to describe an ordered phase are identified.

Phase Transitions in a Fluid of Biaxial Particles

TL;DR: In this paper, a model for a fluid of biaxial particles within a type of mean-field approximation was solved. And the results suggest that the phase diagram of such a fluid exhibits a special critical point where two second-order critical lines meet a first-order phase boundary in a sharp cusp.
