TLDR
It is as biocompatible as β-TCP, but more soluble, and hydrolyses rapidly to calcium-deficient hydroxyapatite, which makes α- TCP a useful component for preparing self-setting osteotransductive bone cements and biodegradable bioceramics and composites for bone repairing.

Journal ArticleDOI

Evaluation of the sintering temperature on the mechanical behavior of β-tricalcium phosphate/calcium silicate scaffolds obtained by gelcasting method.

TL;DR: Gel casting led to scaffolds with high porosity (84%) and pores sizes varying from 160 to 500 µm, which is an important factor for the neovascularization of the growing tissue, which has led to the formation of a dense and uniform apatite layer after biomineralization assessment.

Crystallized nano-sized alpha-tricalcium phosphate from amorphous calcium phosphate: microstructure, cementation and cell response

TL;DR: This is the first report of pure α-TCP nanoparticles with a reactivity that has not required additional milling to cause cementation, and good biocompatibility was found in pureα-TCp nanoparticles made from ethanol treatment and with a larger crystallite size.
