By-product metals are technologically essential but have problematic supply
TL;DR: It is this subset of companion metals—vital in current technologies such as electronics, solar energy, medical imaging, energy-efficient lighting, and other state-of-the-art products—that may be at the greatest risk of supply constraints in the coming decades.
Journal ArticleDOI
Germanium Alloyed Kesterite Solar Cells with Low Voltage Deficits
TL;DR: In this article, a simple molecular ink was used to spray coat continuous composition gradients of Cu2Zn(Sn,Ge)(S,Se)4 spanning 0-90% Ge/(Ge + Sn).
Journal ArticleDOI
Total material requirement for the global energy transition to 2050: A focus on transport and electricity
Takuma Watari,Takuma Watari,Benjamin McLellan,Damien Giurco,Elsa Dominish,Eiji Yamasue,Keisuke Nansai,Keisuke Nansai +7 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors demonstrate a systematic model that can quantify resource flows of both minerals and energy resources under the energy transition by using stock-flow dynamics and the concept of Total Material Requirement (TMR).
Journal ArticleDOI
Materials availability for thin film (TF) PV technologies development: A real concern?
TL;DR: In this article, the authors explore the claim that scarcity of key component materials has been highlighted as a potential barrier to both large scale deployment and reductions in technology cost in PV technologies.
Journal ArticleDOI
Perspectives on the pathways for cadmium telluride photovoltaic module manufacturers to address expected increases in the price for tellurium
Michael Woodhouse,Alan Goodrich,Robert Margolis,Ted James,Ramesh Dhere,Timothy A. Gessert,Teresa M. Barnes,Roderick G. Eggert,David S. Albin +8 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined the sensitivity of total CdTe module manufacturing prices to the price of this minor metal and found that module manufacturers could conceivably absorb a gradual increase in Te prices up to an order of magnitude higher than what was typical for 2011 without significantly compromising their near to mid-term competitive position within the PV industry.
