The global lightning-induced nitrogen oxides source
Ulrich Schumann,Heidi Huntrieser +1 more
TL;DR: The best estimate of the annual global LNOx nitrogen oxides nitrogen mass source and its uncertainty range is (5±3) Tg a−1 in this paper, implying larger flash-specific NOx emissions.
Journal ArticleDOI
Lightning and climate: A review
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors summarized research on regional and global lightning activity and the global electrical circuit and summarized that the area of activity has greatly expanded through observations of lightning by satellite and through increased use of the natural (Schumann) resonances of the Earth-ionosphere cavity.
Journal ArticleDOI
WWLL global lightning detection system: Regional validation study in Brazil
Erin H. Lay,Robert H. Holzworth,Craig J. Rodger,Jeremy N. Thomas,Osmar Pinto,Richard L. Dowden +5 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors analyzed the performance of the World Wide Lightning Location Network (WWLL) with respect to time, location, and peak current of lightning strokes in Brazil and found that the detected strokes have a location accuracy of 20.25 ± 13.5 km and a temporal accuracy of 0.06 ± 0.2 ms.
Journal ArticleDOI
Ten-year study of cloud-to-ground lightning activity in the Iberian Peninsula
TL;DR: In this article, the authors analyzed the characteristics (annual and diurnal cycle, polarity, multiplicity and first stroke peak current) of cloud-to-ground flashes recorded in the Iberian Peninsula during the first decade of measurements of the lightning detection network installed in Spain are analyzed.
Journal ArticleDOI
The World Wide Lightning Location Network and Convective Activity in Tropical Cyclones
TL;DR: Lightning flash density in tropical cyclones is investigated to identify whether lightning flashes provide information on TC intensity and/or intensity change, to provide further insight into TC asymmetric convective structure induced by vertical shear and storm motion, and to assess how well the World Wide Lightning Location Network (WWLLN) is suited for the observation of TCs.

TL;DR: The Lightning Imaging Sensor (LIS) is a NASA Earth Observing System (EOS) instrument on the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) platform designed to acquire and investigate the distribution and variability of total lightning (i.e., cloud-to-ground and intracloud) between q35' in latitude.

Lightning Ground Flash Density in the Contiguous United States-1989
TL;DR: Cloud-to-ground lightning data for the years 1992-95 have been analyzed for geographical distribution of total flashes, positive flashes, and the percentage of flashes that lower positive charge to ground.
Journal ArticleDOI
Cloud‐to‐ground lightning flash characteristics in the contiguous United States: 1989–1991
TL;DR: In this paper, wideband magnetic direction finders have been used to obtain a cloud-to-ground lightning flash count for the contiguous United States, an area of 77×106 km2, for the period 1989 through 1991 over 46 million flashes to ground were recorded and are divided among three years, 134 million in 1989, 159 million in 1990, and 169 million in 1991.
ANNUAL SUMMARY Lightning Ground Flash Measurements over the Contiguous United States: 1995-97
TL;DR: In this article, the authors analyzed cloud-to-ground lightning data for the years 1995-97 for the contiguous United States for total flashes, positive flashes, the percentage of positive lightning, peak currents for negative and positive lightning and for negative multiplicity.
