Cortisol regulation in posttraumatic stress disorder and major depression: a chronobiological analysis.

TLDR
The pattern of cortisol secretion and regulation observed in the PTSD group under baseline conditions may reflect an exaggerated sensitization, whereas the chronobiological alterations in depression may reflect dysregulation, of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis.

Protective and Damaging Effects of Stress Mediators

TL;DR: The long-term effect of the physiologic response to stress is reviewed, which I refer to as allostatic load, which is the ability to achieve stability through change.

If it goes up, must it come down? Chronic stress and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical axis in humans.

TL;DR: A meta-analysis showed that much of the variability in HPA activity is attributable to stressor and person features, as hormonal activity is elevated at stressor onset but reduces as time passes.

The potential role of hypocortisolism in the pathophysiology of stress-related bodily disorders.

TL;DR: It is proposed that a persistent lack of cortisol availability in traumatized or chronically stressed individuals may promote an increased vulnerability for the development of stress-related bodily disorders.

Antenatal maternal stress and long-term effects on child neurodevelopment: how and why?

TL;DR: It is suggested that extra vigilance or anxiety, readily distracted attention, or a hyper-responsive HPA axis may have been adaptive in a stressful environment during evolution, but exists today at the cost of vulnerability to neurodevelopmental disorders.

The polyvagal theory: phylogenetic substrates of a social nervous system

TL;DR: From this phylogenetic orientation, the polyvagal theory proposes a biological basis for social behavior and an intervention strategy to enhance positive social behavior.

A specific laboratory test for the diagnosis of melancholia. Standardization, validation, and clinical utility.

TL;DR: Abnormal DST results were found with similar frequency among outpatients and inpatients with melancholia; but they were not related to age, sex, recent use of psychotropic drugs, or severity of depressive symptoms.
Journal ArticleDOI

Transduction of psychosocial stress into the neurobiology of recurrent affective disorder.

TL;DR: The author postulates that both sensitization to stressors and episode sensitization occur and become encoded at the level of gene expression, suggesting that the biochemical and anatomical substrates underlying the affective disorders evolve over time as a function of recurrences, as does pharmacological responsivity.

Clinical and biochemical manifestations of depression. Relation to the neurobiology of stress (2)

TL;DR: Whereas psychopharmacologic intervention may be required to resolve an active episode of major depression and to prevent recurrences, psychotherapy may be equally important to lessen the burden of stress imposed by intense inner conflict and counterproductive defenses.

Bright light induction of strong (type 0) resetting of the human circadian pacemaker.

TL;DR: The data indicate that the sensitivity of the human circadian pacemaker to light is far greater than previously recognized and have important implications for the therapeutic use of light in the management of disorders of circadian regulation.
