Detection of nitrous acid in the atmosphere by differential optical absorption
Dieter Perner,Ulrich Platt +1 more
TLDR
In this article, the formation of HNO2 was investigated by long path optical absorption at three sites in Western Europe and it vas definitely identified and measured in moderately polluted air at Julich.Abstract:
HNO2 was investigated by long path optical absorption at three sites in Western Europe. It vas definitely identified and measured in moderately polluted air at Julich. Mixing ratios as high as 0.8 ppb were observed before sunrise. After sunrise the HNO2 is photolyzed and considerable amounts of OH are produced. The formation of HNO2 is unclear and possible reactions are discussed.read more

Atmospheric chemistry of VOCs and NOx
TL;DR: The present status of knowledge of the gas phase reactions of inorganic Ox, Hox and NOx species and of selected classes of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and their degradation products in the troposphere is discussed in this paper.

Multi axis differential optical absorption spectroscopy (MAX-DOAS)
TL;DR: In this paper, a Monte Carlo RTM is applied to calculate Airmass Factors (AMF) for the various viewing geometries of MAX-DOAS, which can be used to quantify the light path length within the absorber layers.

Photosensitized reduction of nitrogen dioxide on humic acid as a source of nitrous acid
Konrad Stemmler,Markus Ammann,Chantal A. Donders,Chantal A. Donders,Jörg Kleffmann,Christian George +5 more
TL;DR: This work exposes humic acid films to nitrogen dioxide in an irradiated tubular gas flow reactor and finds that reduction of nitrogen dioxide on light-activated humic acids is an important source of gaseous nitrous acid.

Ralf Kurtenbach,K. H. Becker,J. A. G. Gomes,J. Kleffmann,Jutta Lörzer,M. Spittler,Peter Wiesen,R. Ackermann,A. Geyer,Ulrich Platt +9 more
TL;DR: In this paper, simultaneous measurements of nitrous acid (HONO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) using a differential optical absorption spectroscopy system, nitrogen oxide (NO) by an in situ chemiluminescence analyser and carbon dioxide (CO2) by a gas chromatographic technique were carried out in Wuppertal Kiesbergtunnel.

Numerical analysis and estimation of the statistical error of differential optical absorption spectroscopy measurements with least-squares methods
Jochen Stutz,Ulrich Platt +1 more
TL;DR: A new analysis procedure was developed, modeling atmospheric spectra with the absorption structures of the individual trace gases, to determine their concentrations and corrects differences in the wavelength-pixel mapping of these spectra.

Simultaneous measurement of atmospheric CH2O, O3, and NO2 by differential optical absorption
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors used a ground-based UV-optical absorption technique which allowed the simultaneous determination of CH2O, NO2, and O3 with detection limits of 0.1, 1, and 1 ppb, respectively, for rural areas around Julich and for maritime air at the north coast of Germany.

A kinetic study of the gas phase formation and decomposition reactions of nitrous acid
E. W. Kaiser,C. H. Wu +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the kinetics of the gas phase decomposition and formation reactions of nitrous acid, 2HONO = NO + NO/sub 2/ + H/sub O (k/sub 1/k/s), were investigated in a Pyrex reactor at HONO partial pressures of 0.05 to 1.0 Torr and total pressures of 5 to 50 Torr using a mass spectrometer detector.
