Results reinforce the usefulness of a brief, easy to administer, patient-based index of asthma control.
Abstract
Background Asthma guidelines indicate that the goal of treatment should be optimum asthma control In a busy clinic practice with limited time and resources, there is need for a simple method for assessing asthma control with or without lung function testing Objectives The objective of this article was to describe the development of the Asthma Control Test (ACT), a patient-based tool for identifying patients with poorly controlled asthma Methods A 22-item survey was administered to 471 patients with asthma in the offices of asthma specialists The specialist's rating of asthma control after spirometry was also collected Stepwise regression methods were used to select a subset of items that showed the greatest discriminant validity in relation to the specialist's rating of asthma control Internal consistency reliability was computed, and discriminant validity tests were conducted for ACT scale scores The performance of ACT was investigated by using logistic regression methods and receiver operating characteristic analyses Results Five items were selected from regression analyses The internal consistency reliability of the 5-item ACT scale was 084 ACT scale scores discriminated between groups of patients differing in the specialist's rating of asthma control (F = 345, P P 1 (F = 43, P = 0052) As a screening tool, the overall agreement between ACT and the specialist's rating ranged from 71% to 78% depending on the cut points used, and the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was 077 Conclusion Results reinforce the usefulness of a brief, easy to administer, patient-based index of asthma control

Reliever-Triggered Inhaled Glucocorticoid in Black and Latinx Adults with Asthma

TL;DR: Among Black and Latinx adults with moderate-to-severe asthma, provision of an inhaled glucocorticoid and one-time instruction on its use, added to usual care, led to a lower rate of severe asthma exacerbations as discussed by the authors .

Implication of BIRC5 in asthma pathogenesis

TL;DR: The results suggest that possibly by inhibition of the eosinophil apoptosis, BIRC5 might be an important regulator of the asthmatic processes and some evidence that its effect might be affected by SNPs located in the gene regulatory regions is provided.

Asthma in Obese Women: Outcomes and Factors Involved

TL;DR: It is shown that serum leptin levels might have a role in poor asthma control in obese patients, and can conclude that obesity is an important factor in uncontrolled asthma.

Clinical asthma phenotypes in th e real world: opportunities and ch allenges

TL;DR: Asthma is a common, chronic and heterogeneous syndrome, affecting people of all ages, all races and both sexes as discussed by the authors, and it may range from mild disease with barely noticeable symptoms, to very severe disease with constant symptoms that greatly hinder the life of the patient.

Complementary and alternative medication (CAM) use and asthma outcomes in children: an urban perspective.

TL;DR: Positive parental beliefs about CAM were significantly associated with greater risks for nonadherence and poorer asthma control and future research should assess the specific pathways that may account for these associations among CAM use and asthma outcomes.

The meaning and use of the area under a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve.

James A. Hanley, +1 more
- 01 Apr 1982 -
TL;DR: A representation and interpretation of the area under a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve obtained by the "rating" method, or by mathematical predictions based on patient characteristics, is presented and it is shown that in such a setting the area represents the probability that a randomly chosen diseased subject is (correctly) rated or ranked with greater suspicion than a random chosen non-diseased subject.

A method of comparing the areas under receiver operating characteristic curves derived from the same cases.

TL;DR: This paper refines the statistical comparison of the areas under two ROC curves derived from the same set of patients by taking into account the correlation between the areas that is induced by the paired nature of the data.

Linking clinical variables with health-related quality of life. A conceptual model of patient outcomes

TL;DR: This model proposes a taxonomy or classification scheme for different measures of health outcome, dividing these outcomes into five levels: biological and physiological factors, symptoms, functioning, general health perceptions, and overall quality of life.

Development and validation of a questionnaire to measure asthma control

Surveillance for asthma--United States, 1980-1999.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present national data regarding self-reported asthma prevalence, school and work days lost because of asthma, and asthma-associated activity limitations (1980-1996); asthmaassociated outpatient visits, asthmaassociated hospitalizations, asthma associated hospitalizations and asthmaassociated deaths.
