Results reinforce the usefulness of a brief, easy to administer, patient-based index of asthma control.
Abstract
Background Asthma guidelines indicate that the goal of treatment should be optimum asthma control In a busy clinic practice with limited time and resources, there is need for a simple method for assessing asthma control with or without lung function testing Objectives The objective of this article was to describe the development of the Asthma Control Test (ACT), a patient-based tool for identifying patients with poorly controlled asthma Methods A 22-item survey was administered to 471 patients with asthma in the offices of asthma specialists The specialist's rating of asthma control after spirometry was also collected Stepwise regression methods were used to select a subset of items that showed the greatest discriminant validity in relation to the specialist's rating of asthma control Internal consistency reliability was computed, and discriminant validity tests were conducted for ACT scale scores The performance of ACT was investigated by using logistic regression methods and receiver operating characteristic analyses Results Five items were selected from regression analyses The internal consistency reliability of the 5-item ACT scale was 084 ACT scale scores discriminated between groups of patients differing in the specialist's rating of asthma control (F = 345, P P 1 (F = 43, P = 0052) As a screening tool, the overall agreement between ACT and the specialist's rating ranged from 71% to 78% depending on the cut points used, and the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was 077 Conclusion Results reinforce the usefulness of a brief, easy to administer, patient-based index of asthma control

Validation of the Asthma Control Test in pregnant asthmatic women

TL;DR: The ACT proved to be reliable and could discriminate between levels of asthma control in pregnant women confirming its value as a useful tool for the management of asthma during pregnancy.

Asthma patient satisfaction with different dry powder inhalers

TL;DR: Specific satisfaction with inhaler was higher with EasyhalerTM in a homogeneous population of patients with moderate to severe asthma, however, the relationship between satisfaction with the inhaler and adherence and asthma control deserves more investigation.

Once-daily fluticasone furoate/vilanterol versus twice-daily fluticasone propionate/salmeterol in patients with asthma well controlled on ICS/LABA

TL;DR: Data suggest that patients well controlled on FP/SAL could step across to FF/VI without loss of control, and demonstrate non-inferiority in evening trough forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1).

Treating According to Asthma Control: Does it Work in Real Life?

TL;DR: Control-based asthma management has been incorporated in asthma guidelines for many years, the evidence for its utility in adults is reviewed, its strengths and limitations in real life are described, and areas for further research are proposed.

Paradoxical Vocal Fold Motion in Difficult Asthma Is Associated with Dysfunctional Breathing and Preserved Lung Function.

TL;DR: Among specialist-referred patients with difficult asthma, VCD pathogenesis may overlap with dysfunctional breathing but is not associated with severe airflow obstruction, and Dysfunctional breathing and preserved lung function may serve as clinical clues for the presence of VCD.

The meaning and use of the area under a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve.

TL;DR: A representation and interpretation of the area under a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve obtained by the "rating" method, or by mathematical predictions based on patient characteristics, is presented and it is shown that in such a setting the area represents the probability that a randomly chosen diseased subject is (correctly) rated or ranked with greater suspicion than a random chosen non-diseased subject.

TL;DR: This paper refines the statistical comparison of the areas under two ROC curves derived from the same set of patients by taking into account the correlation between the areas that is induced by the paired nature of the data.

Linking clinical variables with health-related quality of life. A conceptual model of patient outcomes

Surveillance for asthma--United States, 1980-1999.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present national data regarding self-reported asthma prevalence, school and work days lost because of asthma, and asthma-associated activity limitations (1980-1996); asthmaassociated outpatient visits, asthmaassociated hospitalizations, asthma associated hospitalizations and asthmaassociated deaths.
