Effect of trends on detrended fluctuation analysis.

TLDR
It is shown how to use DFA appropriately to minimize the effects of trends, how to recognize if a crossover indicates indeed a transition from one type to a different type of underlying correlation, or if the crossover is due to a trend without any transition in the dynamical properties of the noise.

Robustness of Estimators of Long-Range Dependence and Self-Similarity under non-Gaussianity

TL;DR: It is found that the most popular estimators for LRD and self-similarity can be biased in the presence of important features of many natural systems like trends and multiplicative noise.

Distribution of natural trends in long-term correlated records: a scaling approach.

TL;DR: This work estimates the exceedance probability that, in a long-term correlated Gaussian-distributed (sub) record of length L characterized by a fluctuation exponent α between 0.5 and 1.5, a relative increase Δ/σ(t) of size larger than x occurs, where Δ is the total observed increase measured by linear regression and σ is the standard deviation around the regression line.

How main-chains of proteins explore the free-energy landscape in native states.

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that the mean-square displacement of dihedral angles, defined by 4 successive Cα atoms, increases as a power law of time, tα, with an exponent α between 0.08 and 0.39 at 300 K.

River flow fluctuation analysis: Effect of watershed area

TL;DR: In this article, a detailed river flow fluctuation analysis on daily records from 14 stations in the Flint River Basin in Georgia in the southeastern United States with special focus on the effect of watershed area on long memory of river flow fluctuations.

Multifractal detrended fluctuation analysis for clustering structures of electricity price periods

TL;DR: In this article, a new model is proposed to investigate the structure of electricity price in different time periods, and the minimum number of indicators is determined so that the discriminant accuracy reaches maximum based on Fisher's linear discriminant algorithm (Fisher's LDA).

Long-Term Storage Capacity of Reservoirs

TL;DR: In this paper, a solution of the problem of determining the reservoir storage required on a given stream, to guarantee a given draft, is presented, where a long-time record of annual total...

Mosaic organization of DNA nucleotides

TL;DR: This work analyzes two classes of controls consisting of patchy nucleotide sequences generated by different algorithms--one without and one with long-range power-law correlations, finding that both types of sequences are quantitatively distinguishable by an alternative fluctuation analysis method.

Quantification of scaling exponents and crossover phenomena in nonstationary heartbeat time series

TL;DR: A new method--detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA)--for quantifying this correlation property in non-stationary physiological time series is described and application of this technique shows evidence for a crossover phenomenon associated with a change in short and long-range scaling exponents.

Detecting long-range correlations with detrended fluctuation analysis

TL;DR: It is shown that deviations from scaling which appear at small time scales become stronger in higher orders of detrended fluctuation analysis, and a modified DFA method is suggested to remove them.

Estimators for long-range dependence: an empirical study

TL;DR: In this paper, various methods for estimating the self-similarity parameter and/or the intensity of long-range dependence in a time series are available. But some of these methods are more reliable than others.
