TLDR
The capacity of aortic endothelial cells to produce prostaglandin I2 is decreased by continuous exposure to eicosapentaenoic acid, and the presence of other fatty acids in physiologic amounts may be representative of the in vivo effects of eicOSapentaenosic acid on the endothelium.

Release of intact endothelium-derived relaxing factor depends on endothelial superoxide dismutase activity

TL;DR: It is suggested that endothelial superoxide dismutase activity, but not catalase or glutathione, is necessary for the release of biologically active EDRF.

Immunonutrition: role of biosurfactants, fiber, and probiotic bacteria

TL;DR: It has recently been shown that L. plantarum possesses the ability to adhere to and colonize intestinal mucosa, and seems to be effective in eliminating nitrate and producing nitric oxide.

Formation of 9-Hydroxyoctadecadienoic Acid from Linoleic Acid in Endothelial Cells

TL;DR: Human umbilical vein endothelial cells convert linoleic acid to two monohydroxyoctadecadienoic acids, 9- and 13-HODE, which suggest that HODE may have extracellular effects, especially within the vascular wall.
Journal ArticleDOI

Polyunsaturated fatty acids increase lipid radical formation induced by oxidant stress in endothelial cells

TL;DR: The findings suggest that the endothelium may become more susceptible to oxidative injury when it is exposed to elevated amounts of polyunsaturated fatty acids, however, the effect appears to be temporary.
Journal ArticleDOI

Polydipsia in rhesus monkeys deficient in omega-3 fatty acids

TL;DR: A new effect of long-term dietary omega-3 fatty acid deficiency in rhesus monkeys is found, and changes in fluid intake and output may be related to direct or indirect effects on central or peripheral control mechanisms for drinking or excretion.

A simple method for the isolation and purification of total lipides from animal tissues.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors described a simplified version of the method and reported the results of a study of its application to different tissues, including the efficiency of the washing procedure in terms of the removal from tissue lipides of some non-lipide substances of special biochemical interest.
Journal ArticleDOI

Preparation of fatty acid methyl esters and dimethylacetals from lipids with boron fluoride–methanol

TL;DR: The procedure developed is simple, rapid, and generally applicable t o lipids, and the results did not affect the validity of the method.

The inverse relation between fish consumption and 20-year mortality from coronary heart disease.

TL;DR: It is concluded that the consumption of as little as one or two fish dishes per week may be of preventive value in relation to coronary heart disease.

Eicosapentaenoic acid and prevention of thrombosis and atherosclerosis

TL;DR: Unlike arachidonic acid, eicosapentaenoic acid (C20:5omega-3, E.P.A.) does not induce platelet aggregation in human platelet-rich plasma (P.R.X.A.P.), probably because of the formation of thromboxane A3 (T.G.I3) which does not have platelet aggregating properties.

Effect of dietary enrichment with eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic acids on in vitro neutrophil and monocyte leukotriene generation and neutrophil function

TL;DR: The effects of dietary fish-oil fatty acids on the function of the 5-lipoxygenase pathway of peripheral-blood polymorphonuclear leukocytes and monocytes were determined in seven normal subjects who supplemented their usual diet with daily doses of triglycerides.
