Age, gender, neck circumference, and Epworth sleepiness scale do not predict obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in moderate to severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD): The challenge to predict OSA in advanced COPD.
Xavier Soler,Shu-Yi Liao,Jose M. Marin,Geraldo Lorenzi-Filho,Rachel Jen,Pamela N. DeYoung,Robert L. Owens,Andrew L. Ries,Atul Malhotra +8 more
TL;DR: It is found that traditional OSA predictors (e.g. gender, Epworth score) did not perform well in patients with more advanced COPD, and a pilot, simplified screening test for OSA may be an easy to implement instrument to screen for Osa.
Journal ArticleDOI
Longitudinal assessment of excessive daytime sleepiness in early Parkinson’s disease
Amy W. Amara,Lama M. Chahine,Chelsea Caspell-Garcia,Jeffrey D. Long,Christopher S. Coffey,Birgit Högl,Aleksandar Videnovic,Alex Iranzo,Geert Mayer,Nancy Foldvary-Schaefer,Ronald B. Postuma,Wolfgang H. Oertel,Shirley Lasch,Ken Marek,Tanya Simuni +14 more
TL;DR: In early PD, EDS increases significantly over time and is associated with several clinical variables, including non-motor symptoms and cerebrospinal fluid phosphorylated- tau/total-tau ratio.
Journal ArticleDOI
The Personalized Parkinson Project: examining disease progression through broad biomarkers in early Parkinson’s disease
B.R. Bloem,W. J. Marks,A. L. Silva de Lima,A. L. Silva de Lima,Mark L. Kuijf,T. van Laar,Bart Jacobs,Marcel M. Verbeek,Rick C. Helmich,B.P.C. van de Warrenburg,Luc J.W. Evers,Joanna IntHout,T. van de Zande,Thomas M. Snyder,Ritu Kapur,Marjan J. Meinders +15 more
TL;DR: The Personalized Parkinson Project (PPP) proposes an unbiased approach to biomarker development with multiple biomarkers measured longitudinally, to improve existing treatments, develop new therapeutic approaches, and offer Parkinson’s disease patients a more personalized disease management approach.
Journal ArticleDOI
Resetting the late timing of 'night owls' has a positive impact on mental health and performance.
TL;DR: The findings propose a novel strategy for shifting clock timing towards a pattern that is more aligned to societal demands that could significantly improve elements of performance, mental health and sleep timing in the real world.
Journal ArticleDOI
No Acute Effects of Cannabidiol on the Sleep-Wake Cycle of Healthy Subjects: A Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled, Crossover Study.
Ila M. P. Linares,Francisco Silveira Guimarães,Alan Luiz Eckeli,Ana Chrystina de Souza Crippa,Antonio Waldo Zuardi,José Diogo S. Souza,Jaime Eduardo Cecílio Hallak,José Alexandre de Souza Crippa +7 more
TL;DR: The present findings support the proposal that CBD do not alter normal sleep architecture and address the effects of CBD on the sleep-wake cycle of patient populations as well as in clinical trials with larger samples and chronic use of different doses of CBD.

Daytime Sleepiness, Snoring, and Obstructive Sleep Apnea: The Epworth Sleepiness Scale
TL;DR: The Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) as mentioned in this paper is a simple questionnaire measuring the general level of daytime sleepiness, called here the average sleep propensity This is a measure of the probability of falling asleep in a variety of situations.
Journal ArticleDOI
Relation of sleepiness to respiratory disturbance index: the Sleep Heart Health Study.
Daniel J. Gottlieb,Coralyn Whitney,William H. Bonekat,Conrad Iber,Gary D. James,Michael D. Lebowitz,F J Nieto,C E Rosenberg +7 more
TL;DR: It is concluded that SDB is associated with excess sleepiness in community-dwelling, middle-aged and older adults, not limited to those with clinically apparent sleep apnea.
Journal ArticleDOI
The Epworth Sleepiness Scale may not reflect objective measures of sleepiness or sleep apnea
TL;DR: The data suggest that the subjectively derived ES cannot be used as a surrogate for the objectively determined Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSL) or measures of sleep apnea severity.
Journal ArticleDOI
The multiple sleep latency test: what does it measure?
Journal ArticleDOI
Sleepiness and driving: the experience of U.K. car drivers
TL;DR: The accident liability of the drivers has been evaluated using a multivariate statistical model; for some drivers, accident liability is shown to be sensitive to daytime sleepiness.
