Who should receive a statin these days? Lessons from recent clinical trials.

TL;DR: Clinical trials have demonstrated statins' capacity not only to extend life, but also to improve its quality by retarding the progression of diabetes mellitus and chronic renal disease and by enhancing central and peripheral blood flow.
Journal ArticleDOI

Reaching goal in hypercholesterolaemia: dual inhibition of cholesterol synthesis and absorption with simvastatin plus ezetimibe.

TL;DR: For patients who do not reach their cholesterol goal with a statin, adding ezetimibe 10 mg significantly reduces LDL‐C compared with statin monotherapy, and this treatment option may help patients reach the new ‘stricter’ cholesterol goals.
Journal ArticleDOI

Effect of a low dose of sea buckthorn berries on circulating concentrations of cholesterol, triacylglycerols, and flavonols in healthy adults.

TL;DR: The consumption of SBB significantly increased the fasting plasma concentration of quercetin and isorhamnetin indicating that it is a good dietary source of flavonols, however, this did not convert to affecting the circulating concentrations of lipid markers in healthy, normolipidemic adults having healthy diets.
Journal ArticleDOI

Evaluating the causal relevance of diverse risk markers: horizontal systematic review

TL;DR: This horizontal systematic review pinpoints deficiencies and strengths in the evidence for depression, exercise, C reactive protein, and diabetes as unconfounded and unbiased causes of coronary heart disease.
Journal ArticleDOI

Statins and C-Reactive Protein Levels

TL;DR: CRP reduction is independent of LDL‐C lowering, and variation between statins in CRP reduction may play some role in CVD event reduction rates, at present, however, there are few outcome data relating to the cardiovascular benefits of reducing CRP.

Cardiovascular Disease in Sub-Saharan Africa

TL;DR: The focus of the present series of articles on Africa in this issue of Circulation on sub-Saharan Africa is linguistically and culturally different from Northern Africa, which is also the putative cradle of humankind.
