Proteoglycans and Related Components in Plant Cells

TL;DR: Although functions of arabinogalactan proteins have not been clearly identified, regulated expression and several other lines of evidence point to involvement in plant reproductive development, pattern formation, and somatic embryogenesis, as well as in the underlying processes of cell division, cell expansion, and cell death.

Gum arabic glycoprotein is a twisted hairy rope : a new model based on o-galactosylhydroxyproline as the polysaccharide attachment site.

TL;DR: A simple statistical model of the gum arabic glycoprotein predicts a repeating polysaccharide-peptide subunit of about 7 kilodaltons, which will maximize intramolecular hydrogen bonding if aligned along the long axis of the molecule, forming in effect a twisted hairy rope.

Periplasmic arabinogalactan glycoproteins act as a calcium capacitor that regulates plant growth and development.

TL;DR: It is proposed that these Ca(2+) waves prime the 'calcium oscillator', a signal generator essential to the global Ca( 2+) signalling pathway of green plants.

Gum arabic glycoprotein contains glycomodules of both extensin and arabinogalactan-glycoproteins.

TL;DR: The glycosylation sites of GAGP were inferred based on the Hyp contiguity hypothesis which predicts arabinosides on contiguous Hyp residues and arabinogalactan polysaccharides on clustered non-contiguous Hyp residues, and this rigidifies the glycoprotein, enhances the overall symmetry of the glycopeptide motif, and may explain some of the remarkable properties of gum arabic.

β-Galactosyl Yariv reagent binds to the β-1,3-galactan of arabinogalactan-proteins

TL;DR: It is concluded that Yariv phenylglycosides should be considered specific binding reagents for β-1,3-galactan chains longer than five residues, and seven residues are sufficient for cross linking, leading to precipitation of the Yariv phenotype.
