Image change detection algorithms: a systematic survey

TLDR
In this paper, the authors present a systematic survey of the common processing steps and core decision rules in modern change detection algorithms, including significance and hypothesis testing, predictive models, the shading model, and background modeling.
Abstract
Detecting regions of change in multiple images of the same scene taken at different times is of widespread interest due to a large number of applications in diverse disciplines, including remote sensing, surveillance, medical diagnosis and treatment, civil infrastructure, and underwater sensing. This paper presents a systematic survey of the common processing steps and core decision rules in modern change detection algorithms, including significance and hypothesis testing, predictive models, the shading model, and background modeling. We also discuss important preprocessing methods, approaches to enforcing the consistency of the change mask, and principles for evaluating and comparing the performance of change detection algorithms. It is hoped that our classification of algorithms into a relatively small number of categories will provide useful guidance to the algorithm designer.

A Multiscale Object-Specific Approach to Digital Change Detection

TL;DR: In this article, an object-specific multiscale digital change detection approach was proposed to detect significant spatial changes occurring through space and time, which incorporates multitemporal SPOT Panchromatic (Pan) data, object specific analysis (OSA), object specific up-scaling (OSU), marker-controlled watershed segmentation (MCS), and image differencing change detection.

Statistical Approaches to Feature-Based Object Recognition

TL;DR: Evidence is presented indicating that, in some domains, normal (Gaussian) distributions are more accurate than uniform distributions for modeling feature fluctuations, which motivates the development of new maximum-likelihood and MAP recognition formulations which are based on normal feature models.

Change detection and background extraction by linear algebra

TL;DR: Two techniques for change detection that have been developed to deal with variations in illumination and background, with real-time capabilities are proposed based on a vector model of images and on the exploitation of the concepts of linear dependence and linear independence.

The detection and significance of subtle changes in mixed-signal brain lesions by serial MRI scan matching and spatial normalization

TL;DR: A novel quantitative approach has been presented for the detection and quantification of subtle signal changes in lesions based on serial MRI scan matching, of potential clinical value in the non-invasive characterization of signal change and biological behaviour of neoplastic lesions.

Boundary and Object Detection in Real World Images

TL;DR: A self-scaling local edge detector that can be applied in parallel on a picture is described in this paper, where the edge data is processed to local images of objects and generated a data structure that represents the imaged objects.
