Inhibition of apoptosis by intracellular protozoan parasites

TLDR
Two families of molecules, which are known for their capacity to interrupt the apoptotic program, are currently discussed in the literature and can directly interfere with molecules of the cellular death machinery.

Apoptosis in the malaria protozoan, Plasmodium berghei: a possible mechanism for limiting intensity of infection in the mosquito.

TL;DR: The malaria protozoan, Plasmodium berghei, exhibits features typical of metazoan apoptotic cells including condensation of chromatin, fragmentation of the nuclear DNA and movement of phosphatidylserine from the inner to the outer lamellae of the cell membrane, which occur in vitro.

Cell signalling and Trypanosoma cruzi invasion

TL;DR: Differential engagement of host cell signalling pathways in a cell type‐specific manner and modulation ofHost cell gene expression by T. cruzi are becoming recognized as essential determinants of infectivity and intracellular survival by this pathogen.

Apoptosis in molluscan immune defense

TL;DR: The gaps in understanding of this critical cellular process in molluscs will be delineated to assist in the ongoing search for evolutionary novel mechanisms of apoptosis in immune defense and self/non-self-recognition.

Wolbachia Interferes with Ferritin Expression and Iron Metabolism in Insects

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that iron metabolism is influenced by the presence of Wolbachia not only in the obligate mutualism with A. tabida, but also in facultative parasitism involving Drosophila simulans and in Aedes aegypti cells.

Activation of NF-ΚB by Toxoplasma gondii correlates with increased expression of antiapoptotic genes and localization of phosphorylated IΚB to the parasitophorous vacuole membrane

TL;DR: Results from this study suggest that activation of NF-κB plays an important role in stimulation of antiapoptotic gene expression by T. gondii, and recruitment of phosphorylated IκB to the PVM implies the presence of intrinsic factor(s) in T. Gondii that might be used to manipulate the NF-σκB signaling pathway in the host to elicit a survival response during infection.

Phosphorylation meets ubiquitination: the control of NF-[kappa]B activity.

TL;DR: Recent progress has been made in understanding the details of the signaling pathways that regulate NF-kappaB activity, particularly those responding to the proinflammatory cytokines tumor necrosis factor-alpha and interleukin-1.

Cleavage of BID by Caspase 8 Mediates the Mitochondrial Damage in the Fas Pathway of Apoptosis

TL;DR: The results indicate that BID is a mediator of mitochondrial damage induced by Casp8, and coexpression of BclxL inhibits all the apoptotic changes induced by tBID.

Activators and target genes of Rel/NF-kappaB transcription factors.

TL;DR: It is argued that NF-κB functions more generally as a central regulator of stress responses and pairing stress responsiveness and anti-apoptotic pathways through the use of a common transcription factor may result in increased cell survival following stress insults.
