Compensatory investment in zebra finches: females lay larger eggs when paired to sexually unattractive males.
TL;DR: It is shown that female zebra finches invested more resources, both in terms of egg volume and yolk carotenoid content, when paired to a low genetic quality male, as judged from his previous ability to obtain extra-pair paternity in aviary colonies, the first experimental support for the compensatory investment hypothesis in a species with lifetime monogamy.
Journal ArticleDOI
Stomatal and non-stomatal limitations of photosynthesis for four tree species under drought: A comparison of model formulations
John E. Drake,John E. Drake,Sally A. Power,Remko A. Duursma,Belinda E. Medlyn,Michael J. Aspinwall,Brendan Choat,Danielle Creek,Derek Eamus,Chelsea Maier,Sebastian Pfautsch,Renee Smith,Mark G. Tjoelker,David T. Tissue +13 more
TL;DR: Empirical models implementing stomatal and non-stomatal limitations of photosynthesis under strong drought conditions are suggested, including highly predictive simple models based on leaf water potential.
Journal ArticleDOI
Environmental and genetic control of insect abundance and herbivory along a forest elevational gradient
TL;DR: An increase in insect folivory on high-elevation N. pumilio forests under future climate warming scenarios is suggested, but in the short-term, folvory increases might be smaller than expected from insect abundance only because at high elevations herbivores would encounter more resistant tree genotypes.
Journal ArticleDOI
Identifying multiple sclerosis subtypes using unsupervised machine learning and MRI data.
Arman Eshaghi,Alexandra L. Young,Alexandra L. Young,Peter A. Wijeratne,Ferran Prados,Ferran Prados,Ferran Prados,Douglas L. Arnold,Sridar Narayanan,Charles R.G. Guttmann,Frederik Barkhof,Daniel C. Alexander,Alan J. Thompson,Declan T. Chard,Declan T. Chard,Olga Ciccarelli,Olga Ciccarelli +16 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors applied unsupervised machine learning to brain MRI scans acquired in previously published studies and defined MS subtypes as cortex-led, normal-appearing white matter-led and lesion-led.
Journal ArticleDOI
Local and landscape management drive trait-mediated biodiversity of nine taxa on small grassland fragments
Urs G. Kormann,Verena Rösch,Péter Batáry,Teja Tscharntke,Kirill Márk Orci,Ferenc Samu,Christoph Scherber +6 more
TL;DR: Despite taxon-specific responses, this study demonstrates universal, trait-mediated effects of management, landscape complexity and connectivity on local biodiversity in fragmented communities.
