Journal ArticleDOI
Global analysis of depletion and recovery of seabed biota after bottom trawling disturbance
Jan G. Hiddink,Simon Jennings,Marija Sciberras,Claire L. Szostek,Kathryn M. Hughes,Nick Ellis,Adriaan D. Rijnsdorp,Robert A. McConnaughey,Tessa Mazor,Ray Hilborn,Jeremy S. Collie,C. Roland Pitcher,Ricardo O. Amoroso,Ana M. Parma,Petri Suuronen,Michel J. Kaiser +15 more
TL;DR: All available data for experimental and comparative studies of trawling impacts on whole communities of seabed macroinvertebrates on sedimentary habitats are collated and widely applicable methods to estimate depletion and recovery rates of biota after trawled are developed.
Journal ArticleDOI
Rapid emergence of climate change in environmental drivers of marine ecosystems
Stephanie A. Henson,Claudie Beaulieu,Tatiana Ilyina,Jasmin G. John,Matthew C. Long,Roland Séférian,Jerry Tjiputra,Jorge L. Sarmiento +7 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that the exposure of marine ecosystems to climate change-induced stress can be drastically reduced via climate mitigation measures; with mitigation, the proportion of ocean susceptible to multiple drivers within the next 15 years is reduced to 34%.
Journal ArticleDOI
Ferritin levels in the cerebrospinal fluid predict Alzheimer's disease outcomes and are regulated by APOE
TL;DR: It is shown that baseline CSF ferritin levels were negatively associated with cognitive performance over 7 years in 91 cognitively normal, 144 mild cognitive impairment and 67 AD subjects, and predicted MCI conversion to AD.
Journal ArticleDOI
Generalized biomass and leaf area allometric equations for European tree species incorporating stand structure, tree age and climate
David I. Forrester,David I. Forrester,I. H. H. Tachauer,Peter Annighoefer,Ignacio Barbeito,Hans Pretzsch,Ricardo Ruiz-Peinado,Ricardo Ruiz-Peinado,Hendrik Stark,Giorgio Vacchiano,Tzvetan Zlatanov,Tamalika Chakraborty,Somidh Saha,Somidh Saha,Gudeta W. Sileshi +14 more
TL;DR: Generic equations were developed that include species-specific wood density instead of species identity that can be used in a wide range of stands and to quantify the effects of climate, age and stand structure on biomass or leaf area.
Journal ArticleDOI
Ectomycorrhizal fungi slow soil carbon cycling
TL;DR: It is shown that ectomycorrhizal roots and hyphae decrease soil carbon respiration rates by up to 67% under field conditions in two separate field exclusion experiments, which likely occurs via competition for soil nitrogen, an effect larger than 2 °C soil warming.
