Pharmacological alleviation of cholinergic lesion induced memory deficits in rats

TLDR
The hypothesis that central cholinergic systems are involved in the retention of learned responses in adult rats is supported, and the postacquisition administration of the acetylcholinesterase inhibitor, physostigmine, is suggested to be reversed.

The basal forebrain-cortical cholinergic system: interpreting the functional consequences of excitotoxic lesions

TL;DR: It is proposed that many of the functional consequences of ibotenic acid lesions on mnemonic tasks cannot be attributed to disruption of basal forebrain cholinergic systems, but may instead result from damage in the globus pallidus to corticostriatal output pathways.

Structural roles of acetylcholinesterase variants in biology and pathology

TL;DR: It is postulate that the homology of AChE to the cell adhesion proteins, gliotactin, glutactin and the neurexins, which have more established functions in nervous system development, is the basis of its morphogenic functions.

Animal models of Alzheimer's disease: experimental cholinergic denervation.

TL;DR: Future research should focus upon the systematic production and analysis of non-cholinergic neurotransmitter and cytoskeletal abnormalities to determine the contribution of these factors to the pathology seen in AD and the production of deficit in aged animals, which may more closely approximate the deficits in AD.
Journal ArticleDOI

Place navigation in rats is impaired by lesions of medial septum and diagonal band but not nucleus basalis magnocellularis.

TL;DR: The hypothesis that the cholinergic innervation of the hippocampus plays a key role in spatial reference memory processes involved in place navigation is discussed.

Alzheimer's disease and senile dementia: loss of neurons in the basal forebrain.

TL;DR: Demonstration of selective degeneration of neurons of the nucleus basalis of Meynert represents the first documentation of a loss of a transmitter-specific neuronal population in a major disorder of higher cortical function and points to a critical subcortical lesion in Alzheimer's patients.

Alzheimer's disease: a disorder of cortical cholinergic innervation

TL;DR: Advances in neurotransmitter systems involved in the symptomatic manifestations of neurological and psychiatric disorders reflect a close interaction between experimental and clinical neuroscientists in which information derived from basic neurobiology is rapidly utilized to analyze disorders of the human brain.

Habituation: A model phenomenon for the study of neuronal substrates of behavior.

TL;DR: An apparatus for cleaning and sterilizing objects, such as pharmaceutical caps, plugs and the like, includes an autoclave chamber and a cleaning device having a cleaning drum mounted for a free rotation on a frame.

A rapid radiochemical method for the determination of choline acetyltransferase.

TL;DR: It is shown that the method for isolating labelled ACh by liquid cation exchange using sodium tetraphenylboron (Kalignost) in ethyl butyl ketone can be simplified considerably by using the scintillation mixture as extraction solvent and carrying out the extraction directly in theScintillation vial.
