Postprandial Hyperglycemia Lowering Effect of the Isolated Compounds from Olive Mill Wastes - An Inhibitory Activity and Kinetics Studies on α-Glucosidase and α-Amylase Enzymes.

Seven compounds from olive mill wastes are isolated and investigated their antidiabetic potential through inhibition of α-glucosidase and α-amylase enzymes, one of them being novel, and it is shown that the esterification of C-1 of the furofuran ring is the key feature for the stronger activity of 1-acetoxypinoresinol 3 against both enzymes.

Inhibition of alpha-glucosidase and amylase by luteolin, a flavonoid.

TL;DR: Luteolin inhibited alpha-glucosidase by 36% at the concentration of 0.5 mg/ml and was stronger than acarbose, the most widely prescribed drug, in inhibitory potency, suggesting that it has the possibility to effectively suppress postprandial hyperglycemia in patients with non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus.
