Precursors of nitrogenous disinfection by-products in drinking water--a critical review and analysis

TLDR
It was calculated that for HANs and HAcAms, the concentrations of known precursors - mainly free amino acids are insufficient to account for the observed concentrations of these N-DBP groups, however, at least in some waters, a significant proportion of CNX and NDMA formation can be explained by known precurors.

A review of what is an emerging contaminant

TL;DR: A review is presented of how one defines emerging contaminants and what can be included in that group of contaminants which is preferably termed “contaminants of emerging concern”.

Aqueous adsorption and removal of organic contaminants by carbon nanotubes.

TL;DR: Carbon nanotubes are predicted to have considerable prospects for wider application to wastewater treatment in the future and removal efficiencies and adsorption mechanisms as well as thermodynamics and reaction kinetics are discussed.
Journal ArticleDOI

Occurrence and behaviors of fluorescence EEM-PARAFAC components in drinking water and wastewater treatment systems and their applications: a review

TL;DR: PARAFAC components have been proven to be valuable as surrogates for conventional water quality parameter, to track the changes of organic matter quantity and quality in drinking water and wastewater treatments, and they are also feasible for assessing formations of trihalomethanes and other DBPs and evaluating treatment system performance.

Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) based wastewater treatment - unexpected nitration side reactions - a serious environmental issue: A review

TL;DR: In this paper, a comparison of various AOPs in terms of nitro-products formation mechanisms and the associated environmental issues is presented, where the sonochemical nitrogen fixation is a key mechanism for the formation of Nitro-compounds in ultrasound-based AOP.

Pharmaceuticals, hormones, and other organic wastewater contaminants in U.S. streams, 1999-2000: a national reconnaissance.

TL;DR: The U.S. Geological Survey used five newly developed analytical methods to measure concentrations of 95 organic wastewater contaminants (OWCs) in water samples from a network of 139 streams across 30 states during 1999 and 2000 as mentioned in this paper.

Organic geochemistry of natural waters

E. M. Thurman
TL;DR: The first part of the book as mentioned in this paper is a general overview of the amount and general nature of dissolved organic carbon in natural waters, and the second part is a summary of the data that has accumulated from many disciplines over the last decade.

Pharmaceuticals, Hormones, and Other Organic Wastewater Contaminants in U.S. Streams

TL;DR: Results of this study demonstrate the importance of obtaining data on metabolites to fully understand not only the fate and transport of OWCs in the hydrologic system but also their ultimate overall effect on human health and the environment.
