TLDR
This study represents the most extensive taxonomic sampling effort to date to collect new molecular characters for phylogenetic analysis of acanthomorph fishes, with new and reliable clades emerging from this study of the acanthomorphic radiation.About:

Journal ArticleDOI
A novel rhodopsin-like gene expressed in zebrafish retina.
TL;DR: This study suggests that rh1-2 is a functional opsin gene that is expressed in the retina later in development, surprising given zebrafish's status as a model system for studies of vertebrate vision and visual development.
Journal ArticleDOI
Molecular phylogenetic relationships and the evolution of the placenta in Poecilia (Micropoecilia) (Poeciliidae: Cyprinodontiformes).
TL;DR: A concatenation of seven nuclear gene segments and two mitochondrial segments is used to examine relationships within Micropoecilia and between this subgenus and other subgenera in Poeciliids and recovered a basal split between Poecilia (Acanthophacelus)+Poecili (MicropoECilia) and the other three sub genera.
Journal ArticleDOI
Gobies are deeply divided: phylogenetic evidence from nuclear DNA (Teleostei: Gobioidei: Gobiidae)
TL;DR: Gobies (Gobiidae sensu Gill & Mooi, 2012) are one of the most diverse families of vertebrates, and comprise over 1700 species of marine, brackish and freshwater fishes.
Journal ArticleDOI
Molecular and morphological phylogenies of the Antarctic teleostean family Nototheniidae, with emphasis on the Trematominae
Sophie Sanchez,Agnès Dettai,Céline Bonillo,Catherine Ozouf-Costaz,H. William Detrich,Guillaume Lecointre +5 more
TL;DR: Four independent molecular data sets were sequenced in order to solve longstanding phylogenetic problems among Antarctic teleosts of the family Nototheniidae and show that the tendencies shown by some trematomines to secondarily colonize the water column are not gained through common ancestry.
Journal ArticleDOI
The duplication of the Hox gene clusters in teleost fishes
TL;DR: Assuming the “duplication early” hypothesis, the new evidence on the Hox gene complements are used to determine the phylogenetic positions of gene-loss events in the wake of the cluster duplication, and it is found that the resolution of redundancy seems to be a slow process that is still ongoing.

The neighbor-joining method: a new method for reconstructing phylogenetic trees.
Naruya Saitou,Masatoshi Nei +1 more
TL;DR: The neighbor-joining method and Sattath and Tversky's method are shown to be generally better than the other methods for reconstructing phylogenetic trees from evolutionary distance data.
Journal ArticleDOI
Confidence limits on phylogenies: an approach using the bootstrap.
TL;DR: The recently‐developed statistical method known as the “bootstrap” can be used to place confidence intervals on phylogenies and shows significant evidence for a group if it is defined by three or more characters.
Journal ArticleDOI
The CLUSTAL_X windows interface: flexible strategies for multiple sequence alignment aided by quality analysis tools.
TL;DR: ClUSTAL X is a new windows interface for the widely-used progressive multiple sequence alignment program CLUSTAL W, providing an integrated system for performing multiple sequence and profile alignments and analysing the results.
Journal ArticleDOI
MODELTEST: testing the model of DNA substitution.
David Posada,Keith A. Crandall +1 more
TL;DR: The program MODELTEST uses log likelihood scores to establish the model of DNA evolution that best fits the data.
