In this paper, the tenability of a hypothetical construct of interest as it applies to the secondary mathematics classroom was proposed and empirically assessed, and the results indicate that it is useful to distinguish between personal and situational interest.
Abstract
The present study attempted to tackle a hurdle that continues to plague the research on interest: the lack of an adequate theoretical model. In particular, the tenability of a hypothetical construct of interest as it applies to the secondary mathematics classroom was proposed and empirically assessed. Building on previous theoretical work, the study used qualitative and quantitative methodologies to first develop a model and then assess its construct validity. The results indicate that it is useful to distinguish between personal and situational interest. Furthermore, the results indicate that the structure of situational interest is multifaceted, clarifying 5 subfacets of situational interest in the high school mathematics classroom

What if I can’t? Success expectancies moderate the effects of utility value information on situational interest and performance

TL;DR: In this article, the effects of a utility value manipulation on interest and performance were moderated by expectations for success, and the results showed further support for the importance of success expectancies in moderating the effect of directly-communicated utility value.

The Effects of a Web-Based Learning Environment on Student Motivation in a High School Earth Science Course

TL;DR: In this paper, a Web-based learning environment (Web-LE) was designed to improve the students' motivation to learn science by incorporating factors believed to enhance intrinsic motivation (challenge, control, curiosity, and fantasy) into the instructional design of the web-based tool.

Triggering situational interest by decorative illustrations both fosters and hinders learning in computer-based learning environments

TL;DR: In this paper, the influence of interesting decorative illustrations on immediate learning outcomes in geometry (near and far transfer) and on further learning was investigated in a pre-study (N ǫ=87 8th grade students).

Antecedents and consequences of situational interest.

TL;DR: Results suggest that classroom practices shape SI, which was positively related to individual interest and perceived competence in science at the end of the programme as well as teacher-rated engagement and mediated the associations of classroom practices with these outcomes.

How situational is situational interest? Investigating the longitudinal structure of situational interest

TL;DR: In this paper, repeated measurements of situational interest collected from a sample of 327 high school students during problem-based learning activities were analyzed using Latent State Trait (LST) theory.

Significance tests and goodness of fit in the analysis of covariance structures

TL;DR: In this article, a general null model based on modified independence among variables is proposed to provide an additional reference point for the statistical and scientific evaluation of covariance structure models, and the importance of supplementing statistical evaluation with incremental fit indices associated with the comparison of hierarchical models.

How We Think

TL;DR: In this article, the importance of critical thinking and the vital role education should play in the development of the critical thinking skills of children has been highlighted, and an appreciation of this correlation and a recognition of its value in educational practice can promote individual happiness and reduce social waste.
