Resilience and other stability concepts in ecology: notes on their origin, validity and usefulness

TL;DR: Resilience and other stability concepts in ecology: notes on their origin, validity and usefulness.
Journal ArticleDOI

Unsaturation and regional influences on species richness in ecological communities: A review of the evidence

TL;DR: It is argued that resource limitation and other local factors often fail to set upper limits on local richness, and local richness frequently correlates with the number of species in the surrounding region, and does not become independent of the latter in the richest regions.
Journal ArticleDOI

Individual-based modelling and ecological theory: synthesis of a workshop

TL;DR: The lesson contained in the review is that even with just twelve papers more or less explicitly oriented towards ecological theory, elements of a theory that might emerge from individual-based modelling in the future can already be identified.
Journal ArticleDOI

Growth of birch and pine seedlings in relation to grazing by soil fauna on ectomycorrhizal fungi

Heikki Setälä
- 01 Sep 1995 -
TL;DR: Data indicate that the obvious reduction in EM fungi due to soil fauna is not harmful for the plant-fungus symbiosis provided that the community composition of the belowground food web is complex enough to ensure efficient mobili- zation of nutrients in the mycorrhizosphere.
Journal ArticleDOI

Invasions: the perspective of diverse plant communities

TL;DR: Previous knowledge about the mechanisms favouring invasion needs to be coupled with community theory to form the basis of these new investigations, and it is essential for future studies to explicitly tease apart the effects of species richness per se from theeffects of other components of ecological diversity, such as functional diversity and trophic diversity.
