The shape of evolution: a comparison of real and random clades

TL;DR: A random model that builds evolutionaiy trees by allowing lineages to branch and become extinct at equal probabilities is constructed, and the similarity of real and random clades is regarded as the outstanding result of this work.
Journal ArticleDOI

Carrying Capacity Reconsidered: From Malthus' Population Theory to Cultural Carrying Capacity

TL;DR: In this article, the concept of carrying capacity is investigated to provide an improved understanding about its contribution to solve environmental problems, and it is shown that carrying capacity, when applied in fields where human activity or human aims are involved, is a complex normative concept influenced by ecological dynamics.
Journal ArticleDOI

‘Too interconnected to fail’ financial network of US CDS market: Topological fragility and systemic risk

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors provide an empirical reconstruction of the US CDS network based on the FDIC Call Reports for off-balance sheet bank data for the 4th quarter in 2007 and 2008.

Global Stability in Many-Species Systems

B. S. Goh
TL;DR: Simple and sufficient conditions for generalized Lotka-Volterra models to be globally stable in the positive orthant are described, which imply that if each species in a complex ecosystem sustains density-dependent mortalities due to intraspecific interactions and the interspecific interactions are not too strong then the ecosystem is globally stable.

Evolutionary diversification and the origin of the diversity–environment relationship

TL;DR: To assess the relative roles of local ecological constraint vs. regional and historical unfolding of diversity-environment relationships, ecologists must abandon localized concepts of the community and adopt historical and geographic methods to evaluate the evolution of diversity within large regions and its influence on diversity at local scales.
