An improved synthesis of the title compounds is reported. Reaction of the N,N'-dialkylthioureas 1 with 3-hydroxy-2-butanone gives the imidazole-2(3H)-thiones 2 which on treatment with potassium in boiling tetrahydrofuran give the imidazol-2-ylidenes 3 in excellent yields

In this chapter, we summarize the main results of our investigations on the ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) of cyclooctene catalyzed by various ruthenium (Ru)-arene complexes bearing imidazolin-2-ylidene, imida- zolidin-2-ylidene, or triazolin-5-ylidene ligands. Three major findings emerged from this study. First, we underscored the intervention of a photochemical activation step due to visible light illumination. Second, we established that the presence of an endocyclic double bond in the carbene ligand central heterocycle was not crucial to achieve high catalytic efficiencies. Third, we demonstrated that ortho-metallation of the N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligand by the Ru center led to inactive catalysts.

NHCs werden konventionell durch Deprotonierung von Azoliumsalzen mit starken anionischen Basen synthetisiert. Diese Reaktion ist oft unselektiv und kann zu Alkalimetall-Komplexen der NHCs oder zu dimerisierten NHCs führen. Alternativ können NHCs durch Dechlorierung von 2-Chlorazoliumsalzen mit elektronenreichen Phosphanen erhalten werden. PPh3, PCy3 und PtBu3 sind ungeeignet für die Cl+-Abstraktion, während das sterisch anspruchsvolle Tris(1,3-tert-butylimidazolidin-2-ylidenamino)phosphan 1 selektiv Cl+ von 2-Chlorazoliumsalzen entfernt. Da das sterisch anspruchsvolle 1 nicht an Metallkomplexe bindet, wurde es für die Synthese von NHC-Komplexen durch in-situ-Chloroniumabstraktion von 2-Chlorazoliumsalzen eingesetzt. Die Dechlorierung wurde auch für die regioselektive Monometallierung einer Bis-NHC-Ligandenvorstufe bestehend aus einer 2-Chlorbenzimidazolium- und einer 2-Chlorbenzimidazolgruppe mit IrI, IrIII, RhI, RhIII und RuII eingesetzt, gefolgt von der Synthese des heterobimetallischen IrIII/PdII-Komplexes [18](BF4)2 in einer Dechlorierung/Oxidative-Addition-Reaktionssequenz.
