Segmental necrotising enterocolitis: pathological and clinical features of 22 cases in Bangladesh.

TL;DR: It is indicated that segmental necrotising enterocolitis develops sometimes as a fatal complication of prolonged diarrhoeal illnesses associated with shock and hypoproteinaemia and is caused by ischaemic injury to the intestinal mucosa.
Book ChapterDOI

Carotenoids and Vitamin A: An Overview

TL;DR: Carotenoids are primarily symmetrical, C-40, polyisoprenoid structures with an extensive conjugated double bond system as discussed by the authors, and they are synthesized in photosynthetic microorganisms and plants, but not in animals.
Journal ArticleDOI

Effects of cystine, niacin and taurine on cholesterol concentration in the Japanese quail with comments on bile acid metabolism.

TL;DR: Two-week-old male quail were fed varying concentrations and combinations of cystine, niacin and taurine in the diet for 5 weeks to investigate the possible mechanism of action of these compounds on bile acid metabolism.
Journal ArticleDOI

Metabolic Significance of Collagen in Tooth Structure

TL;DR: The partial hydrolysis of steer-hide collagen produces a high yield of the tripeptide, glycyl-prolyl-hydroxyproline, which contains over 70 per cent of the body's store of glycine, proline, and hydroxyproline.
Journal ArticleDOI

Transmembrane sodium energy gradient and calcium content in the adductor muscle of Mytilus edulis L. in relation to the toxicity of oil and organic chemicals

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors showed that the normal value of the gradient in the posterior adductor muscle of the blue mussel is about 10 000 J/mol, but a number of organic chemical compounds (oil, oil dispersants, formaldehyde and benzene) cause the value to drop.
