TLDR
In this article, a meta-dataset of 362 published organic-conventional comparative crop yields was analyzed at field and crop level, and it was shown that organic yields of individual crops are on average 80% of conventional yields, but variation is substantial.

The significance of soils and soil science towards realization of the United Nations sustainable development goals

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors explore and discuss how soil scientists can help to reach the recently adopted UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the most effective manner and recommend the following steps to be taken by the soil science community as a whole: (i) embrace the UN SDGs, as they provide a platform that allows soil science to demonstrate its relevance for realizing a sustainable society by 2030; (ii) show the specific value of soil science: research should explicitly show how using modern soil information can improve the results of inter-and transdisciplinary studies on SDGs related to food security
Journal ArticleDOI

Organic agriculture in the twenty-first century.

TL;DR: Although organic agriculture has an untapped role to play when it comes to the establishment of sustainable farming systems, no single approach will safely feed the planet and a blend of organic and other innovative farming systems is needed.

Ecosystem Services in Biologically Diversified versus Conventional Farming Systems: Benefits, Externalities, and Trade-Offs

Claire Kremen, +1 more
- 18 Dec 2012 -
TL;DR: In this article, the authors reviewed the literature that compares biologically diversified farming systems with conventional farming systems, and examined 12 ecosystem services: biodiversity; soil quality; nutrient management; water-holding capacity; control of weeds, diseases, and pests; pollination services; carbon sequestration; energy efficiency and reduction of warming potential; resistance and resilience to climate change; and crop productivity.
Journal ArticleDOI

Diversification practices reduce organic to conventional yield gap

TL;DR: Promising results, based on robust analysis of a larger meta-dataset, suggest that appropriate investment in agroecological research to improve organic management systems could greatly reduce or eliminate the yield gap for some crops or regions.

Soil Fertility and Biodiversity in Organic Farming

TL;DR: Results from a 21-year study of agronomic and ecological performance of biodynamic, bioorganic, and conventional farming systems in Central Europe found crop yields to be 20% lower in the organic systems, although input of fertilizer and energy was reduced.

Crop yield gaps: their importance, magnitudes, and causes.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors identified several priorities for future research to reduce the yield gap between average and potential yields in irrigated agriculture, and proposed tools to address the uncertainty in growing season weather.

Organic agriculture and the global food supply

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors compared yields of organic versus conventional or low-intensive food production for a global dataset of 293 examples and estimated the average yield ratio (organic:non-organic) of different food categories for the developed and the developing world.
Journal ArticleDOI

Concepts in production ecology for analysis and quantification of agricultural input-output combinations

TL;DR: Definitions and concepts of production ecology are presented as a basis for development of alternative production technologies characterized by their input-output combinations and clearly discriminate between bio-physical possibilities and socio-economic constraints and objectives.
