In this article, it is suggested that the high boundary mobility associated with misorentations > 10−18° is the origin of pre-existing grain boundaries and transition bands acting as principal sites for nucleation.Abstract:
The phenomenon of nucleation of new grains during annealing of deformed metals is discussed with respect to various aspects of the deformed state, including the stored energy of cold work and various microstructural features. Attention is drawn to those regions of the deformed metal where there is a rapid change of orientation, such as pre-existing grain boundaries and deformation (transition) bands. The currently accepted theory of nucleation, the growth of favoured sub grains, is discussed in the light of the known low mobility of low-angle sub-boundaries. It is suggested that the high boundary mobility associated with misorentations > 10–18° is the origin of pre-existing grain boundaries and transition bands acting as principal sites for nucleation. Recent evidence concerning the initial growth of subgrain ‘nuclei’ is described and it is suggested that subgrain coalescence may often play a crucial role in this process. Subgrain coalscence appears to occur preferentially in those regions of lat...read more

The nucleation of recrystallization at second phase particles in deformed aluminium
TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the nucleation of recrystallization at large second phase particles in deformed aluminium alloy single crystals and found that particle stimulated nucleation occurs above a critical particle size which increases with decreasing strain.

The Effects of Strain on the Microstructures, Fabrics, and Deformation Mechanisms in Quartzites
TL;DR: In this paper, it was shown that coble creep replaces dislocation creep as the main deformation process when the grain size is less than 100 pm and the maps imply that fine grained quartz mylonites are superplastic.

Recrystallization kinetics within adiabatic shear bands
J.A. Hines,Kenneth S. Vecchio +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, a dynamic recrystallization model is proposed in which mechanically-driven subgrain rotations assist the mechanism for recrasing. But the model is not suitable for high strain, high-strain-rate conditions within shear bands.

The structure of deformed aluminium and its recrystallization—investigations with transmission Kossel diffraction
S.P. Bellier,R.D. Doherty +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, a modification to the transmission Kossel diffraction technique was developed that enabled useful orientation information to be obtained from deformed aluminium, and the misorientation produced by moderate deformation by compression of coarse-grained aluminium was studied.

Principles of Solidification
TL;DR: Solidification is the process by which a liquid is transformed into a crystalline solid as discussed by the authors, in which the solid that forms first is solvent rich as distinct from crystallisation, and the crystals that are formed are solute rich.

TL;DR: In this article, it was shown that dislocations of a more general type than encountered in classical theory can be obtained for states of plane and anti-plane strain in a hollow right circular cylinder when the surface of discontinuity is a single stationary plane barrier.
