The dynamical complexity of optically injected semiconductor lasers

TLDR
In this article, the authors present a modern approach to the theoretical and experimental study of complex nonlinear behavior of a semiconductor laser with optical injection-an example of a widely applied and technologically relevant forced nonlinear oscillator, and show that careful bifurcation analysis of a rate equation model yields a deeper understanding of already studied physical phenomena, and discovery of new dynamical effects, such as multipulse excitability.

Parallel photonic information processing at gigabyte per second data rates using transient states

TL;DR: The potential of a simple photonic architecture to process information at unprecedented data rates is demonstrated, implementing a learning-based approach and all digits with very low classification errors are identified and chaotic time-series prediction with 10% error is performed.

Physics and applications of laser diode chaos

TL;DR: The fundamental physics underpinning laser diode chaos and the opportunities for harnessing it for potential applications are discussed in this paper, where the availability and ease of operation of laser diodes, in a wide range of configurations, make them a convenient testbed for exploring basic aspects of nonlinear and chaotic dynamics.

Laser feedback interferometry: a tutorial on the self-mixing effect for coherent sensing

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present a guided tour of laser feedback interferometry, from its origin and early development through its implementation to a slew of sensing applications, including displacement, distance, velocity, flow, refractive index, and laser linewidth measurement.

Recent progress in semiconductor excitable lasers for photonic spike processing

TL;DR: The field is reaching a critical juncture at which there is a shift from studying single devices to studying an interconnected network of lasers, and the recent research in the information processing abilities of such lasers are reviewed, dubbed “photonic neurons,” “laser neurons” or “optical neurons.”
Journal ArticleDOI

Excitability in a quantum dot semiconductor laser with optical injection.

TL;DR: Theoretical considerations show that the appearance of single- and double-pulse excitability at one boundary of the locking region are related to a saddle-node bifurcation on a limit cycle as in the Adler equation.

Deterministic nonperiodic flow

TL;DR: In this paper, it was shown that nonperiodic solutions are ordinarily unstable with respect to small modifications, so that slightly differing initial states can evolve into considerably different states, and systems with bounded solutions are shown to possess bounded numerical solutions.

Nonlinear dynamics and Chaos

TL;DR: The logistic map, a canonical one-dimensional system exhibiting surprisingly complex and aperiodic behavior, is modeled as a function of its chaotic parameter, and the progression through period-doubling bifurcations to the onset of chaos is considered.

Introduction to Applied Nonlinear Dynamical Systems and Chaos

TL;DR: The Poincare-Bendixson Theorem as mentioned in this paper describes the existence, uniqueness, differentiability, and flow properties of vector fields, and is used to prove that a dynamical system is Chaotic.
