Findings showed that the spraying of insecticides did not increase the rate or severity of asthma presentations as measured by the Lincoln Hospital's ED asthma census or hospital admissions for asthma.Abstract:
We report on the incidence of emergency department (ED) asthma presentations and admissions to the Lincoln Hospital, located in the South Bronx of New York City, during the 1999 eradication program of the mosquito vector for West Nile virus. Spraying of Malathion and Resmethrin occurred in the hospital's geographic area over 4 days in September 1999. During that time, 1318 pediatric and adult patients were seen in the ED for asthma-related symptoms. Of these, 222 (16.8%) were hospitalized. Emergency department visits, during days when spraying occurred, were compared with visits during days when no spraying occurred. Comparisons were made with previous years as a reference point. Findings showed that the spraying of insecticides did not increase the rate or severity of asthma presentations as measured by the Lincoln Hospital's ED asthma census or hospital admissions for asthma.read more

TL;DR: It is suggested that prenatal exposure to organophosphates is negatively associated with cognitive development, particularly perceptual reasoning, with evidence of effects beginning at 12 months and continuing through early childhood.

A human-health risk assessment for West Nile virus and insecticides used in mosquito management.
TL;DR: The risk assessment and the current weight of scientific evidence indicate that human-health risks from residential exposure to mosquito insecticides are low and are not likely to exceed levels of concern.

Pesticide exposures and respiratory health in general populations.
TL;DR: Few studies have addressed the impact of environmental pesticide exposures on respiratory health, especially on lung function, in general populations, and research findings from current studies of non-occupational pesticide exposures and their health impact in general population will help to improve the role of regulatory policies.

TL;DR: In this paper, an unusual cluster of cases of meningoencephalitis associated with muscle weakness was reported to the New York City Department of Health and the initial epidemiologic and environmental investigations suggested an arboviral cause.

TL;DR: The data suggest that the prevalence of asthma among inner-city children may be substantially higher than the rates for this group estimated from national survey data and that a large number of children with asthma may be inadequately diagnosed and treated.
