Abstract
Flow physics plays a key role in nearly every facet of the COVID-19 pandemic. This includes the generation and aerosolization of virus-laden respiratory droplets from a host, its airborne dispersion and deposition on surfaces, as well as the subsequent inhalation of these bioaerosols by unsuspecting recipients. Fluid dynamics is also key to preventative measures such as the use of face masks, hand washing, ventilation of indoor environments and even social distancing. This article summarizes what we know and, more importantly, what we need to learn about the science underlying these issues so that we are better prepared to tackle the next outbreak of COVID-19 or a similar disease.

A complex network framework for studying particle-laden flows

TL;DR: In this paper , the authors introduced a framework of complex networks to analyze the particle dynamics through a Lagrangian perspective and observed an emergence of a giant component through a continuous phase transition as particles cluster in the flow field, thus providing novel insight into the spatiotemporal dynamics of particles such as the rate of clustering.

Role of bioaerosol in virus transmission and material‐based countermeasures

TL;DR: In this paper , the authors discuss the three main mechanisms of aerosol generation: direct generation such as coughing and sneezing, indirect generation, and resuspension of settled droplets and aerosols.

Infection risk in cable cars and other enclosed spaces

Ivan Lunati, +1 more
- 01 Aug 2022 -
TL;DR: In this article , the authors characterized the natural ventilation in cable cars and developed a general stochastic model of infection in an arbitrary indoor space that accounts for the epidemiological situation, the virological parameters, and the indoor characteristics (ventilation rate and occupant number density).
Journal ArticleDOI

Effect of humidity on the evolution of COVID-19 droplets distribution in extreme in-homogeneous environment

TL;DR: In this paper, the size distribution of COVID-19 droplets was modeled by using the Weibull distribution of droplets under extreme in-homogeneous conditions and varied the environmental humidity contrast according to the range primarily encountered in the world major cities.
