TLDR
Analysis of abnormal cardiac cycles demonstrated that, when the ventricular pressure first equalled the aortic pressure, the intercomissural distances increased 9 percent, and the valve opened with a stellate orifice without forward flow and without a rise in aorta pressure.

Journal ArticleDOI

On the biomechanics of heart valve function.

TL;DR: The focus of the present review is on functional biomechanics, referring primarily to biosolid as well as several key biofluid mechanical aspects underlying heart valve physiological function, and their integrated relation to the major aspects of valvular hemodynamic function.

Heart valve function: a biomechanical perspective

TL;DR: The present review focuses on the functional biomechanics of HVs, and refers to the unique aspects of valvular function, and how the mechanical and mechanobiological behaviours of the constituent biological materials achieve this remarkable feat.

Opening and closing characteristics of the aortic valve after different types of valve-preserving surgery

TL;DR: Near-normal opening and closing characteristics can be achieved by a technique that preserves the shape and independent mobility of the sinuses of Valsalva.

Prosthetic heart valves: catering for the few.

TL;DR: With tissue-engineered valves aiming at the narrow niche of congenital malformations and synthetic flexible leaflet valves being in their fifth decade of low-key development, heart valve prostheses seem to be destined to remain an unsatisfying and exclusive first world solution for a long time to come.

The dynamic aortic root: Its role in aortic valve function

TL;DR: By attaching appropriate measuring devices to the wall of an intact aortic root at the level of leaflet coaptation, a 16 per cent diameter change during each cardiac cycle is measured.

Normal aortic valve function in dogs.

TL;DR: Commissural expansion gives a smooth opening, less shear stress on the leaflet surface, less flexion stress at the center of the leaflets and less fatigue strain on the Leaflet, thereby maximizing the life and efficiency of the aortic valve.

The influence of left ventricular stroke volume on aortic root motion: an echocardiographic study.

TL;DR: The findings indicate that the aortic root motion is an index of stroke volume; they further suggest thatRoot motion is acutely sensitive to variations in stroke volume since its amplitude changed in accord with the documented effects of the employed maneuvers on stroke volume.
