Abstract
A review is given of progress in the theoretical and experimental study of the Raman effect in crystals during the past ten years. Attention is given to the theory of those properties of long-wavelength lattice vibrations in both cubic and uniaxial crystals which can be studied by Raman scattering. In particular the phenomena observed in the Raman scattering from crystals which lack a centre of inversion are related to the theory. The angular variations of the scattering by any type of lattice vibration in a crystal having any symmetry can be easily calculated using a complete tabulation of the Raman tensor. Recent measurements of first-order lattice vibration spectra are listed. A discussion of Brillouin scattering is included. The relation of second-order Raman spectra to critical points in the lattice vibration density of states is discussed, and measurements of the second-order spectra of diamond and the alkali halides are reviewed. The theory and experimental results for Raman scattering by electroni...

Electron and phonon confinement and surface phonon modes in CdSe–CdS core–shell nanocrystals

TL;DR: The main aim of this paper is to show the unique characteristics of the nanocrystals (which are absent in the corresponding bulk material), such as confinement of optical phonons and the appearance of surface phonons, using the dielectric continuum model.

Raman scattering from bismuth triborate

TL;DR: The Bismuth triborate, BiB3O6 (BiBO), a promising new material for effective frequency conversion, was synthesized by top-seeded growth from the nearly stoichiometric melt at high temperature as discussed by the authors.

Synthesis of Zn 1-x Mg x O and its structural characterization

TL;DR: In this paper, the structural behavior of this material system using x-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy was investigated in detail, showing that Mg substitution up to x ≈ 0.10 does not change the crystal structure.

Polarization dependence of double resonant Raman scattering band in bilayer graphene

TL;DR: In this article, the polarization dependence of the double resonant Raman scattering (2D) band in bilayer graphene is studied as a function of the excitation laser energy.

Raman scattering in Ag-intercalated TiS2

TL;DR: In this article, electron diffraction and Raman scattering were used to investigate the superlattice formation in Ag 0.3 TiS 2 at an ambient temperature of 4.2 K. The energies of the E g -1 and A 1 g modes at 300 K were found to be 232 and 336 cm -1, respectively.

Dynamical Theory of Crystal Lattices

Max Born, +1 more
TL;DR: Born and Huang's classic work on the dynamics of crystal lattices was published over thirty years ago, and it remains the definitive treatment of the subject as mentioned in this paper. But it is not the most complete work on crystal lattice dynamics.
