TLDR
In this paper, the mechanism of formation of plasma-sprayed coatings was examined and related to the microstructure produced, and it was shown that the real area of contact between individual lamellae within the coating and between lamella and substrate is much less than the apparent area because of adsorbed and entrapped gas, oxide films or other contamination.

Mechanisms controlling the durability of thermal barrier coatings

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present relationships between the durability, the governing material properties and salient morphological features of thermal barrier coatings and show that the failure is ultimately connected to the large residual compression in the thermally grown oxide through its roles in amplifying imperfections near the interface.
Journal ArticleDOI

Thermal barrier coatings for aircraft engines: History and directions

TL;DR: In this article, thin thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) for protecting aircraft turbine-section airfoils are examined, focusing on those advances that led first to TBC use for component life extension and more re-cently as an integral part of airfoil design.
Journal ArticleDOI

Understanding plasma spraying

TL;DR: In this paper, a summary of the actual knowledge in plasma spraying with an emphasis on the points where work is still in progress is presented, including: the plasma torches with the resulting plasma jets and their interactions with the surrounding environment, powder injection with the heat, momentum and mass transfers between particles and first plasma jets, the particles flattening and solidification, forming splats which then layer to form the coating.

Current status of thermal barrier coatings — An overview

TL;DR: The state-of-the-art thermal barrier coatings for gas turbine applications are currently a plasma-sprayed ZrO 2 -(6%8%) Y 2 O 3 ceramic layer over an MCrAlY (M ≡ Ni, Co or NiCo) bond coat layer plasma sprayed at low pressure.

The quenching stress in thermally sprayed coatings

TL;DR: In this article, a simple expression to evaluate the residual stress in a plasma-sprayed coating is given for the case where the coating thickness is much smaller than the substrate thickness.

Fracture Mechanics of Ceramics

Dietrich Munz
TL;DR: In this article, a linear-elastic fracture mechanics can be applied to describe the failure behavior of small flaws in ceramic materials, which is caused by the extension of small faults.

Formation of Crystal Nuclei in Liquid Metals

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors calculated the interfacial energies between crystal nuclei and the corresponding liquids from nucleation frequencies of small droplets on the basis of homogeneous nucleation.

The heat transfer from a hot wall to impinging water drops in the spheroidal state

TL;DR: In this paper, the heat transfer from a hot metal wall to impinging mist droplets has been studied with a non-stationary method, based on differentiation of the cooling curve of a thin metal disc, that was heated to a high temperature, and then cooled by a mist of steam and water droplets flowing perpendicular to it.

Solidification of droplets on a cold surface

TL;DR: In this paper, a simple model of two-dimensional radial flow has been used, and the degree of flattening ξm of a droplet depends upon the Weber, Reynolds and Peclet numbers, and upon the freezing constant U, taken from the solution of a Stefan problem.
