How Reliable is the Analysis of Complex Cuticular Hydrocarbon Profiles by Multivariate Statistical Methods
TL;DR: Cuticular hydrocarbon data from previous social insect studies were used and showed that in 13 species of Formica ants and seven species of Vespa hornets, at least one group of hydrocarbons in each species was highly correlated, indicating that all compounds are not independent.
Journal ArticleDOI
The nationalization of electoral change in the Americas
Eduardo Alemán,Marisa Kellam +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, the relative magnitude of national and sub-national shifts in electoral support across parties and elections is measured for the compositional structure of multiparty electoral data. But, the results indicate that the widespread influence of local (i.e., state-specific) factors in electoral change, but highlight the drastic impact that intermittent nationalized shifts on partisan support.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effects of dietary methylmercury on reproductive behavior of fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas)
TL;DR: The effects of dietary methylmercury on the production of testosterone in and the reproductive behavior of male fish were examined in this article. But no significant differences were found in the amount of time spent by male fish in nest preparation or courtship activities.
Journal ArticleDOI
Kin-informative recognition cues in ants
Volker Nehring,Sophie E. F. Evison,Lorenzo A. Santorelli,Patrizia d'Ettorre,Patrizia d'Ettorre,William O. H. Hughes +5 more
TL;DR: Test the hypothesis that social insects do not have kin-informative recognition cues by investigating the recognition cues and relatedness of workers from four colonies of the ant Acromyrmex octospinosus, and shows that the cuticular hydrocarbons of ant workers in all four colonies are informative enough to allow full-sisters to be distinguished from half-sister with a high accuracy.
Journal ArticleDOI
Partial least squares-discriminant analysis of trace element compositions of magnetite from various VMS deposit subtypes: Application to mineral exploration
Sheida Makvandi,Massoud Ghasemzadeh-Barvarz,Georges Beaudoin,Eric C. Grunsky,M. Beth McClenaghan,Carl Duchesne,Emilie Boutroy +6 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the petrography and mineral chemistry of magnetite from fifteen volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits in Canada, and the Lasail VMS deposit in Oman, as well as from two VMS-associated banded iron formations (BIF), were investigated using optical microscopy, electron probe micro-analyzer (EPMA), and laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS).

Problems of relative growth
TL;DR: This detailed study of the different rates of growth of parts of the body relative to the body as a whole represents Sir Julian Huxley's great contribution to analytical morphology, and it is still a basis for modern investigations in morphometrics and evolutionary biology.

Experiments with Mixtures: Designs, Models and the Analysis of Mixture Data
TL;DR: In this paper, the original Mixture Problem is described and models for exploring the Entire Simplex Factor Space are presented, including matrix algebra, least squares, and the analysis of variance.
New statistical methods for allometry with application to
TL;DR: In this paper, Mosimann et al. presented new statistical methods for the study of size and shape, and used these methods to study the morphology of red-winged blackbirds, Agelaius phoeniceus breeding in Florida.
Journal ArticleDOI
Analysis of dispersion on a sphere
TL;DR: In this article, a series of approximate tests of significance is given for hypotheses about the precision constant K and the polar vector on a sphere, where 8' is the angle between the polar and observation vectors.
