TLDR
The results indicated that the loss of photosynthetic ability occurred independently in P. danica and C. infusionum, the first report of the presence of a vestigial chloroplast (leucoplast) in colorless dictyochophytes.

The endosymbiotic origin, diversification and fate of plastids

TL;DR: The many twists and turns of plastid evolution each represent major evolutionary transitions, and each offers a glimpse into how genomes evolve and how cells integrate through gene transfers and protein trafficking.
Journal ArticleDOI

The Number, Speed, and Impact of Plastid Endosymbioses in Eukaryotic Evolution

TL;DR: Questions are examined about the number of endosymbiotic events needed to explain plastid diversity, whether the genetic contribution of the endOSymbionts to the host genome goes far beyond plastids-targeted genes, and whether organelle origins are best viewed as a singular transition involving one symbiont or as a gradual transition involving a long line of transient food/symbiont.

Phylogeny and Megasystematics of Phagotrophic Heterokonts (Kingdom Chromista)

TL;DR: Four new biciliate bicoecean genera and five new species are described and the zooflagellate class Bicoecea (perhaps the ancestral phenotype of Bigyra) is unexpectedly diverse and a major focus of this study.

The twilight of Heliozoa and rise of Rhizaria, an emerging supergroup of amoeboid eukaryotes

TL;DR: Combined small-subunit ribosomal RNA and actin sequence data for the three main groups of "Heliozoa" (Actinophryida, Centrohelida, and Desmothoracida), the heliozoan-like Sticholonche, and the radiolarian group Polycystinea provide solid evidence for the existence of the Rhizaria.

Genomic reduction and evolution of novel genetic membranes and protein-targeting machinery in eukaryote-eukaryote chimaeras (meta-algae)

TL;DR: It is proposed that the periplastid membrane (PPM, the former algal plasma membrane) of chromalveolates, and possibly chlorarachneans, grows by fusion of vesicles emanating from the NM envelope or PPR, which is a potentially novel target for drugs against alveolate Sporozoa such as malaria parasites and Toxoplasma.

TL;DR: Molecular Cloning has served as the foundation of technical expertise in labs worldwide for 30 years as mentioned in this paper and has been so popular, or so influential, that no other manual has been more widely used and influential.

The neighbor-joining method: a new method for reconstructing phylogenetic trees.

TL;DR: The neighbor-joining method and Sattath and Tversky's method are shown to be generally better than the other methods for reconstructing phylogenetic trees from evolutionary distance data.

Confidence limits on phylogenies: an approach using the bootstrap.

TL;DR: The recently‐developed statistical method known as the “bootstrap” can be used to place confidence intervals on phylogenies and shows significant evidence for a group if it is defined by three or more characters.

The CLUSTAL_X windows interface: flexible strategies for multiple sequence alignment aided by quality analysis tools.

TL;DR: ClUSTAL X is a new windows interface for the widely-used progressive multiple sequence alignment program CLUSTAL W, providing an integrated system for performing multiple sequence and profile alignments and analysing the results.
