Vortex‐ring mixing as a measure of diastolic function of the human heart: Phantom validation and initial observations in healthy volunteers and patients with heart failure

TLDR
Vortex-ring mixing can be quantified using 4D flow and the differences in mixing parameters observed between controls and patients motivate further investigation as indices of diastolic dysfunction and heart failure.
Abstract
To present and validate a new method for 4D flow quantification of vortex-ring mixing during early, rapid filling of the left ventricle (LV) as a potential index of diastolic dysfunction and heart failure.

Hemodynamic forces in the left and right ventricles of the human heart using 4D flow magnetic resonance imaging: Phantom validation, reproducibility, sensitivity to respiratory gating and free analysis software.

TL;DR: Software for quantification of hemodynamic forces in 4D-flow MRI was developed, and results show high accuracy and strong to very strong reproducibility for both the LV and RV, supporting its use for research and clinical investigations.

Assessment of diastolic function and atrial remodeling by MRI – validation and correlation with echocardiography and filling pressure

TL;DR: Diastolic parameters can be measured with good reproducibility by cardiovascular MRI, and LA LGE exhibited a strong relationship with pulmonary capillary wedge pressure, an indicator of diastolic function.

Post-operative ventricular flow dynamics following atrioventricular valve surgical and device therapies: A review.

TL;DR: Current consensus around the roles of vortex dynamics in cardiac function is discussed, and an overview of physiological vortex patterns found in healthy left and right ventricles as well as post-operative ventricular flow phenomenon owing to different atrioventricular valvular procedures are reviewed.

Evaluation of left ventricular diastolic function based on flow energetic parameters in chronic kidney disease with diastolic dysfunction

TL;DR: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the LV diastolic function in chronic kidney disease (CKD) with different degrees of LV diastsolic dysfunction (LVDD) by using flow energetic parameters.

Recommendations for the evaluation of left ventricular diastolic function by echocardiography

TL;DR: The assessment of left ventricular (LV) diastolic function and filling pressures is of paramount clinical importance to distinguish this syndrome from other diseases such as pulmonary disease resulting in dyspnea, to assess prognosis, and to identify underlying cardiac disease and its best treatment.

Burden of systolic and diastolic ventricular dysfunction in the community: appreciating the scope of the heart failure epidemic.

TL;DR: In the community, systolic dysfunction is frequently present in individuals without recognized CHF and diastolic dysfunction as rigorously defined by comprehensive Doppler techniques is common, often not accompanied by recognizedCHF, and associated with marked increases in all-cause mortality.
