Abstract: In the present study, the performance of silicone rubber-based bellows-structured pneumatic actuator was analyzed in terms of output bending motion and bending force with relation to input pressure. To perform the analysis, the structural parameters of length, diameter, and wall thickness were characterized and tested with two different silicone materials. The simulation analysis revealed that the stiffness of the silicone materials selected for the bellows actuator imposes strong effects on its bending motion and pneumatic input pressure requirement. Furthermore, the characterization of material-S-based bellows actuator having lengths 84, 126, and 168 mm, with a maximum diameter and a wall thickness of 14 and 1.4 mm, respectively, resulted in maximum output bending angles of 142.4°, 137.5°, and 117° at minimum pneumatic input pressures of 85.5, 66.5, and 85.5 kPa, respectively. Hence, the bellows actuator that simulated in a maximum bending angle of 142.4° was fabricated for validation and experimentally resulted in an average bending force of 9 N.

Abstract: Origami folded cylinders (origami bellows) have found increasingly sophisticated applications in space flight and medicine. In spite of this interest, a general understanding of the mechanics of an origami folded cylinder has been elusive. With a newly developed set of geometrical tools, we have found an analytic solution for all possible cylindrical rigid-face states of both Miura-ori and triangular tessellations. Although an idealized bellows in both of these families may have two allowed rigid-face configurations over a well-defined region, the corresponding physical device, limited by nonzero material thickness and forced to balance hinge and plate-bending energy, often cannot stably maintain a stowed configuration. We have identified the parameters that control this emergent bistability, and we have demonstrated the ability to design and fabricate bellows with tunable deployability.

Abstract: In this work we present a novel, inductance-based system to measure and control the motion of bellows-driven continuum joints in soft robots. The sensing system relies on coils of wire wrapped around the minor diameters of each bellows on the joint. As the bellows extend, these coils of wire become more distant, decreasing their mutual inductance. Measuring this change in mutual inductance allows us to measure the motion of the joint. By dividing the sensing of the joint into two sections and measuring the motion of each section independently, we are able to measure the overall deformation of the joint with a piece-wise constant-curvature approximation. This technique allows us to measure lateral displacements that would be otherwise unobservable. When measuring bending, the inductance sensors measured the joint orientation with an RMS error of 1.1 °. The inductance sensors were also successfully used as feedback to control the orientation of the joint. The sensors proposed and tested in this work provided accurate motion feedback that would be difficult to achieve robustly with other sensors. This sensing system enables the creation of robust, self-sensing soft robots based on bellows-driven continuum joints.

Abstract: The ability of a continuum arm is influenced by the performance of an actuator. Although several extensible pneumatic actuators have been proposed in previous research, balancing strength with large strain is still a challenge. We propose an extensible pneumatic actuator with bellows (EPAB) that consists of a rubber tube and a highly packed bellows sleeve. We propose a parametric model of the EPAB that can comprise various bellows and rubber tubes. We measured the basic properties of four actuators with different parameters to verify the proposed model. We conducted evaluation experiments under two conditions: constant length with variable pressure and constant pressure with variable length. The experimental results indicate that the proposed model can roughly predict the measured data. The proposed extensible actuator has an unloaded strain of up to 350% at a pressure of 0.6 MPa.

Abstract: Due to the complicated material and structural characteristics of bi-layered non-homogeneous bellows (BNBs) in hydroforming, the bellow deviates easily from its designed profile and this inevitable phenomenon results in a low forming precision. Therefore, it is important to study the springback behavior of bellows for precision forming. Based on finite element (FE) analysis, comparative studies on profiles of single-layered bellows, bi-layered homogeneous bellows (BHBs), and BNBs with two expansion ratios (k, the ratio of outer-to-inner diameter) k = 1.2 and k = 1.6 as well as two materials 304SS and Inconel 718 are implemented. The springback behaviors of different simulation settings are investigated, and several conclusions are drawn: (1) after springback, the U-shaped convolution profile is changed to tongue shape accompanied by a 2.5~38.5% axial elongation and a 0.1~0.6% radial shrinkage; (2) the springback tendency grows with the increase of number of layers, the improvement of mechanical properties of material, and the decrease of expansion ratio.

Abstract: The present work elucidates a systematic analysis to understand the influence of design parameters on the static mechanical behavior of metal bellows. This investigation was carried out by applying design of experiment (DOE) techniques. The required responses for DOE were obtained from a set of Finite Element Analysis (FEA) for various configurations of bellows. The FEA results of metal bellows were validated using Expansion Joints Manufacturing Association standard. A mathematical relationship between the design parameters and the static mechanical behavior was derived. It was found that the wall thickness of metal bellows has great influence on the static mechanical behavior of the component. Further the design parameters for the required output were optimized using desirability approach and validation test were carried out using FEA.

Abstract: The design and testing of an origami-based bellows for microgravity drilling is described. The potential benefits of an origami-based solution created an opportunity for application on NASA’s Asteroid Redirect Mission (ARM) to protect sensitive parts from debris. Origami-based bellows were designed to fit spatial limitations and meet needed compression ratios. Designs have demonstrated high mass reductions, improved stroke length, greatly decreased stowed volume, improved flexibility, and reduced reaction forces in comparison with traditional metal bellows. A nylon-reinforced polyvinyl fluoride based bellows with an aramid fiber stitched seam is well suited for debris containment in space conditions. Various epoxies maintained an adequate bond with polyvinyl fluoride below expected environmental temperature for bellows mounting. Asymmetric compression of the bellows occurs at extreme low temperatures and is preventable by balancing stiffness within the structure.

Abstract: The bellows conjecture claims that the volume of any flexible polyhedron of dimension 3 or higher is constant during the flexion. The bellows conjecture was proved for flexible polyhedra in the Euclidean spaces of dimensions 3 and higher, and for bounded flexible polyhedra in the odd-dimensional Lobachevsky spaces. Counterexamples to the bellows conjecture are known in all open hemispheres of dimensions 3 and higher. The aim of this paper is to prove that, nonetheless, the bellows conjecture is true for all flexible polyhedra in either spheres or Lobachevsky spaces of dimensions greater than or equal to 3 with sufficiently small edge lengths.

Abstract: Recently, surgical manipulators have been widely used to support human operations, such as surgical operations. These manipulator systems are suitable for careful work, but they have a few problems. One problem is that the manipulators are not equipped with haptic sensing functions. When a manipulator does not employ haptic sensing functions, an operator can only conduct an operation using visual feedback. Therefore, to substitute for visual detection, it is necessary for the operator to use advanced techniques to determine physical contact during an operation. We have developed a new mechanism to solve this problem. A hydraulically driven joint is constructed in a spherical bearing and bellows tubes that enables a haptic sense display for the operator. This system can measure the small forces acting on the tips of the manipulator using Pascal’s principle. A model of the system is derived from the relationship between the internal pressure of the bellows tube and the refraction angles of the joint. In this study, we quantitatively investigated the relationship between the internal pressure of the bellows tubes and the refraction angles of the joint. To estimate the refraction angle, we measured the quantity of water that was provided from syringes. It was confirmed that the developed system allowed for an estimation of both the strength and direction of the external force applied to the manipulator by measuring the bellows tubes’ internal pressure. This report describes the prototype joint.

The forming method of the corrugated metal hose comprises the steps of rolling plates to form corrugation, then curling and welding, and finally bulging on a bulging machine; flat expanding axial waves at the wave peak position so that the wave peak position has no the axial stiffeners, while the axial stiffeners at the wave trough position are reserved, so that the corrugated metal hose with the axial stiffeners at the wave trough position is obtained.
