TL;DR: In this paper, the authors report on pilot plant trials of three membrane contactors for the separation of CO2 from flue gas, which are porous polypropylene (PP), porous polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), and non-porous polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), with the solvent PuraTreatTM FTM.
Abstract: Membrane gas-solvent contactors have received much attention for CO2 absorption, as the approach incorporates advantages from both solvent absorption and membrane gas separation. This study reports on pilot plant trials of three membrane contactors for the separation of CO2 from flue gas. The contactors were porous polypropylene (PP), porous polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), and non-porous polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), with the solvent PuraTreatTM FTM. To enable performance comparison, laboratory measurements based on a gas mixture of 10% CO2 in N2 were also undertaken on the same contactor–solvent systems. It was found that the PP contactor experienced significant pore wetting in both laboratory and pilot plant studies. In contrast, the PTFE contactor experienced only minor pore wetting in the laboratory. However, in the pilot plant trial of the PTFE contactor extensive pore wetting was observed, and the overall mass transfer coefficient measured was comparable with the PP contactor. The non-porous PDMS con...

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors focus on the net electron-emission current as a function of bias voltage of a plasma source that is being used as the cathodic element in a bare electrodynamic tether system.
Abstract: This paper focuses on the net electron-emission current as a function of bias voltage of a plasma source that is being used as the cathodic element in a bare electrodynamic tether system. An analysis is made that enables an understanding of the basic issues determining the current?voltage (C?V) behaviour. This is important for the efficiency of the electrodynamic tether and for low impedance performance without relying on the properties of space plasma for varying orbital altitudes, inclinations, day?night cycles or the position of the plasma contactor relative to the wake of the spacecraft. The cathodic plasma contactor considered has a cylindrical discharge chamber (10?cm in diameter and ?11?cm in length) and is driven by a hollow cathode. Experiments and a 1D spherical model are both used to study the contactor's C?V curves. The experiments demonstrate how the cathodic contactor would emit electrons into space for anode voltages in the range of 25?40?V, discharge currents in the range of 1?2.5?A, and low xenon gas flows of 2?4?sccm. Plasma properties are measured and compared with (3?A) and without net electron emission. A study of the dependence of relevant parameters found that the C?V behaviour strongly depends on electron temperature, initial ion energy and ion emission current at the contactor exit. However, it depended only weakly on ambient plasma density. The error in the developed model compared with the experimental C?V curves is within 5% at low electron-emission currents (0?2?A). The external ionization processes and high ion production rate caused by the discharge chamber, which dominate the C?V behaviour at electron-emission currents over 2?A, are further highlighted and discussed.

TL;DR: In this paper, a flat membrane microstructured contactor was used to bring into direct contact the two phases (gas and liquid) without dispersing one phase into the other.
Abstract: Absorption of carbon dioxide (CO2) in aqueous solutions of monoethanolamine (MEA) and diethanolamine (DEA) was performed in a flat membrane microstructured contactor. The contactor had dimensions 192 mm × 97 mm (length × width). Liquid and gas flowed in channels of 0.2 mm and 0.85 mm depth, respectively, separated by a supported polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) membrane of 20 μm thickness containing 0.5–5 μm openings. The function of the membrane was to bring into direct contact the two phases (gas and liquid) without dispersing one phase into the other. Experiments were conducted with 1.6 M MEA and 1.6 M DEA solutions and 20 vol% CO2/N2 inlet concentration, with a fixed inlet molar ratio CO2/amine of 0.5 at room temperature. Substantial CO2 absorption was observed for gas residence time below 0.2 s. A mathematical model with no adjustable parameters was used to simulate the contactor, and experimental results were compared to model predictions in terms of CO2 removal efficiency. The model showed satisfacto...

TL;DR: In this article, a 2D numerical model for removal of CO2 in a polypropylene hollow fiber membrane contactor (HFMC) using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method was presented.
Abstract: This present study shows a comprehensive 2D numerical model for removal of CO2 in a polypropylene (PP) hollow fiber membrane contactor (HFMC) using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method. Monoethanolamine (MEA) solution was used as the liquid absorbent in a nonwetting mode. The simulation results represented that higher liquid velocity and concentration and lower gas velocity and concentration led to higher percent of CO2 removal. The most proper parameters for CO2 removal were less than 1 mol m−3 gas concentration and 0.2 m s−1 gas flow rate, and for MEA the values were above 8 mol m−3 concentration and approximately 1 m s−1 liquid velocity. Furthermore, the model was validated with the experiment results. Therefore, the modeling results provided references to the selection of absorbents and operation parameters in the experimental study and pilot-scale applications.

TL;DR: In this paper, a new spring contactor was designed and characterized for wafer-level interposer and high-speed package test system applications, especially for Wafer-Level packages.
Abstract: Novel spring contactors were designed and characterized for wafer-level interposer and high-speed package test system applications, especially for wafer-level packages. These contactors can be used as replacement for vertical wafer probes as well as test sockets used in the final test. The contactor pin consists of a plunger section made of beryllium copper and a plated helical stainless steel spring wire. It is 5 mm in uncompressed total length, including the plunger and the spring. The overall diameter of the spring wire section was 0.51 mm. The design of the contactor is much simpler and more scalable than that of traditional spring pins called Pogo pins used in package tests. A test socket containing 36 contactor pins was constructed for tests and measurements. The experimental characterization shows -1-dB bandwidth of 3.73 GHz for 0.8-mm pitch, measured by the direct contact method. This experimental result correlates well with the simulated results. The rise time was 82 ps as measured by TDR, and the propagation delay was 23 ps. The electrical conduction path is through the pin and the spring, making it a reliable contact. However, the electrical path is known to be through the barrel, not the spring for the regular spring pins.

TL;DR: In this paper, a cuboid permanent magnet is used to provide adjustable magnetic field for accelerating the arc quenching, and the results are of practical value for designing the contact system of a high voltage dc contactor.
Abstract: Supply voltage of the dc power system in an electrical vehicle or an airplane keeps increasing with the increment of their electric energy consumptions, which raises a claim on high voltage contactors or relays. Special design on contact system or arc chamber in the contactor for arc quenching is necessary to meet the requirement of dc high voltage break. In this paper, arc behaviors when a bridge-type contact opens a dc resistive load are studied by analyzing arc shapes and waveforms of arc voltage and current. The power voltage varies from 280 V to 730 V, the current is kept to be 50 A, the material of contact is copper and the arcing gas is air. A cuboid permanent magnet is used to provide adjustable magnetic field for accelerating the arc quenching. Key arc parameters, such as arc durations, arc lengths, arc re-ignitions and the period that the arc stays on contact surface, are obtained as the power voltage increases from 280 V to 730 V and the magnetic field varies from 30 mT to 90 mT. The results are of practical value for designing the contact system of a high voltage dc contactor.
