TL;DR: The authors provides an overview of main causes of endogeneity, approaches to addressing it, and guidance to marketing strategy researchers to balance these issues as the field continues to move towards more methodological sophistication, potentially at the expense of managerial tractability.
Abstract: Endogeneity in empirical marketing research is an increasingly discussed topic in academic research. Mentions of endogeneity and related procedures to correct for it have risen 5x across the field’s top journals in the past 20 years, but represent an overall small portion of extant research. Yet there is often substantial difficulty in reconciling issues of endogeneity with many of the substantive questions of interest to marketing strategy for both theoretical and/or practical reasons. This paper provides an overview of main causes of endogeneity, approaches to addressing it, and guidance to marketing strategy researchers to balance these issues as the field continues to move towards more methodological sophistication, potentially at the expense of managerial tractability.

TL;DR: Each of the impediments to obtaining consensus in psychotherapy is described and some suggestions for what might be done to address them are offered.
Abstract: Although the field of psychotherapy has been in existence for well over a century, it nonetheless continues to be preparadigmatic, lacking a consensus or scientific core. Instead, it is characterized by a large and increasing number of different schools of thought. In addition to the varying ways in which psychotherapy has been conceptualized, there also exists a long-standing gap between psychotherapy research and how it is conducted in actual clinical practice. Finally, there also exists a tendency to place great emphasis on what is new, often rediscovering or reinventing past contributions. This article describes each of these impediments to obtaining consensus and offers some suggestions for what might be done to address them. TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present an application of cluster analysis to examine trends and tendencies in co-copetition research and assesses whether this research field has followed a coherent progression during this period.
Abstract: Since the end of the 1990s, the number of articles on coopetition—a relationship built on simultaneous competition and cooperation—has steadily increased in response to the growing prevalence of relationships of coopetition in many industries. The tension inherent in a relationship of coopetition with a direct competitor presents both a challenge for managers and, at the same time, an exciting and complex research area. Different researchers of coopetition have addressed the topic from vastly different perspectives, basing their research on different theoretical frameworks, types of analysis, methods, and aims. By classifying articles on coopetition published in the last 20 years, this paper presents an application of cluster analysis to examine trends and tendencies in coopetition research. The paper also assesses whether this research field has followed a coherent progression during this period. The research reveals two independent research trends within the coopetition literature. The first research trend consists of studies that have mathematically modeled and simulated coopetition scenarios using game theory, whereas the second research stream consists of theoretical research describing the dynamics and tensions of coopetition based on evidence from case studies. Based on the cluster analysis, inter-firm alliances and their governance mechanisms emerge as the most promising theoretical and practical approach to improve cooperation between competitors.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors highlight the utility of using typologies and taxonomies in advancing family business research and promote the use of these approaches in fostering a better understanding of the heterogeneity that exists among family firms, and how this heterogeneity might be linked to important organizational outcomes.
Abstract: As the field of family business continues to mature, it is not surprising that there is a growing recognition of the degree of heterogeneity among family firms. While many earlier studies focused on differences between family and nonfamily firms, more and more research is centered on identifying the sources and types of variance among family firms. Given the increasing need to better understand differences among family firms, we propose that a configurational approach, which is often reflected in typologies (which are conceptually developed) or taxonomies (which are empirically derived), is a particularly useful perspective to examine within-group heterogeneity. Thus, the goal of this special issue on “Typologies and Taxonomies of Family Business” is to (1) highlight the utility of using typologies and taxonomies in advancing family business research and (2) promote the use of these approaches in fostering a better understanding of the heterogeneity that exists among family firms, and how this heterogeneity might be linked to important organizational outcomes. With these goals in mind, this commentary provides a review of articles in the extant family business literature that have used typologies or taxonomic classifications to describe family businesses. Our review lays the foundation for the subsequent presentation of a synopsis of each of the four articles contained within the special issue. Finally, we conclude with a discussion of suggestions for future research using typologies and taxonomies and their application to family firm heterogeneity. We start by discussing the most common approach used.

TL;DR: The authors argue that new and unexpected ethical questions can emerge after exiting the field, including responsibilities to research participants, dissemination, and publication, which should be part of how we conceive of ethical obligations.
Abstract: As researchers, when do our ethical obligations end? How should our ethical obligations respond to dynamic and unstable political contexts? Political scientists frequently work in dynamic political situations that can pose new ethical questions beyond those existing at the point of fieldwork. Yet, research ethics are often conceived in terms of a static, if not hermetically sealed, field site that remains frozen in time at the point we conduct fieldwork and collect data. I argue, first, that we need to consider more systematically how a dynamic field intersects with ethical obligations. Second, I argue that new and unexpected ethical questions can emerge after exiting the field, including responsibilities to research participants, dissemination, and publication, and returning to the field, which should be a part of how we conceive of ethical obligations.

TL;DR: Virtual reality technology is implemented to manipulate characteristics of avatars in virtual scenes to find that closer interpersonal distances, more direct interpersonal angles and more open avatar postures led to a higher probability of a group being judged as interactive.
Abstract: Identifying whether people are part of a group is essential for humans to understand social interactions in social activities. Previous studies have focused mainly on the perceptual grouping of low-level visual features. However, very little attention has been paid to grouping in social scenes. Here we implemented virtual reality technology to manipulate characteristics of avatars in virtual scenes. We found that closer interpersonal distances, more direct interpersonal angles and more open avatar postures led to a higher probability of a group being judged as interactive. We developed a social interaction field model that describes a front-back asymmetric social interaction field. This model accurately predicts participants' perceptual judgements of social grouping in real static and dynamic social scenes. Our findings indicate that the social interaction field model is an efficient computational framework for analysing social interactions and provides insight into how human observers perceive the interactions of others, enabling the identification of social groups.

TL;DR: The Field of Water Policy: Power and Scarcity in the American Southwest brings the tools of Pierre Bourdieu's field sociology to bear on a moment of environmental crisis, with a study of the logics of water policy as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: Bringing together the analysis of a diverse team of social scientists, this book proposes a new approach to environmental problems. Cutting through the fragmented perspectives on water crises, it seeks to shift the analytic perspectives on water policy by looking at the social logics behind environmental issues. Most importantly, it analyzes the dynamic influences on water management, as well as the social and institutional forces that orient water and conservation policies. The first work of its kind, The Field of Water Policy: Power and Scarcity in the American Southwest brings the tools of Pierre Bourdieu’s field sociology to bear on a moment of environmental crisis, with a study of the logics of water policy in the American Southwest, a region that allows us to see the contest over the management of scarce resources in a context of lasting drought. As such, it will appeal to scholars in the social and political sciences with interests in the environment and the management of natural resources.

TL;DR: In this article, a systematic review of sustainable human resource management (HRM) is presented, highlighting its major themes and the evolution and tendencies observed in this field, including environmental management, socially responsible HRM, and turnover.
Abstract: This manuscript presents a systematic review of “sustainable human resource management” (HRM), highlighting its major themes and the evolution and tendencies observed in this field. It contributes to the development of this relatively new topic, offering a critical evaluation and identifying the highest impact research strands. The Web of Science database returned 111 documents spanning the period 1997–2018, and a conceptual science mapping analysis based on co‐word bibliographic networks was developed, using SciMAT as an analytical tool. The motor themes (well developed and important for the structure of the discipline) in the field of sustainable HRM are environmental management, socially responsible HRM, and turnover. Employee engagement is a specialised theme (well developed but less important for the structure of the research field), human resource practices is a basic or transversal theme (important for the discipline but not developed), and sustainable leadership and environmental performance are emerging themes (both weakly developed and marginal to the field).
