THE DESIGN AND ANALYSIS OF EXPERIMENTS. By Oscar Kempthorne. New York, John Wiley and Sons, Inc., 1952. 631 pp. $8.50. This book by a teacher of statistics (as well as a consultant for \"experimenters\") is a comprehensive study of the philosophical background for the statistical design of experiment. It is necessary to have some facility with algebraic notation and manipulation to be able to use the volume intelligently. The problems are presented from the theoretical point of view, without such practical examples as would be helpful for those not acquainted with mathematics. The mathematical justification for the techniques is given. As a somewhat advanced treatment of the design and analysis of experiments, this volume will be interesting and helpful for many who approach statistics theoretically as well as practically. With emphasis on the \"why,\" and with description given broadly, the author relates the subject matter to the general theory of statistics and to the general problem of experimental inference. Climate change 2014 - Synthesis Report

This first report of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment describes the conceptual framework that is being used in the MA. It is not a formal assessment of the literature, but rather a scientifically informed presentation of the choices made by the assessment team in structuring the analysis and framing the issues. The conceptual framework elaborated in this report describes the approach and assumptions that will underlie the analysis conducted in the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment. The framework was developed through interactions among the experts involved in the MA as well as stakeholders who will use its findings. It represents one means of examining the linkages between ecosystems and human well-being that is both scientifically credible and relevant to decision-makers. This framework for analysis and decision-making should be of use to a wide array of individuals and institutions in government, the private sector, and civil society that seek to incorporate considerations of ecosystem services in their assessments, plans, and actions.

Interactions between barley cultivars and soil tillage - effects on yield and disease.

J. Inst. Brew. 111(2), 144–152, 2005 Four barley cultivars were grown in replicated trials at three sites in Scotland in 2000, both as pure stands and in all four possible three-component mixtures. After harvest, some grain from the pure stands was used to synthesise four blends of three com-ponent varieties. Grain from the pure stands, the mixtures and the blends was malted and all samples were assessed for total -glucan content. At two of the sites, field grown mixtures were shown to have lower malt -glucan than blends made prior to malting, although their grain -glucan contents had not been sig-nificantly different from the means of the component varieties. At the other site, the mixtures had higher levels of soluble nitro-gen than the blends or the means of their component cultivars although, significant differences had not occurred in grain nitro-gen contents. Three component blends were also made from the malted grain of the pure stands and hot water extracts were mea-sured on all samples including the blends made before and after malting. There were considerable differences between sites and also between mixtures, blends and the mean of the mixture com-ponents when assessed separately. At all sites and for all varietal combinations, field grown mixtures were shown to be equal or superior to blends made after harvesting, in addition to fre-quently exceeding the mean of their components. It was con-cluded that the advantages, in -glucan or protein modification, associated with mixtures resulted from interactions between components in the growing environment and that interactions in the malting and mashing environments had little if any effect.

17 18 Background. At least a fifth of tropical forests have been logged in the recent past. This practice is 19 an important source of timber but there are concerns about its long-sustainability and impacts on 20 biodiversity and carbon storage. However, there is wide variation in the impacts of logging, making 21 generalisation, and thus policy implementation, difficult. Recent syntheses of animal biodiversity 22 have indicated that differences in logging intensity – the volume of wood removed per hectare – 23 may help explain some of these differences. In addition there have been suggestions that reduced 24 impact logging (RIL) may reduce some of the negative effects of logging. 25 Methods. We aimed to test these hypotheses using meta-analyses to explore differences in the 26 impacts of logging on (1) residual tree damage, (2) aboveground biomass and (3) tree species 27 richness. 28 Results. Our results indicate that RIL may reduce residual tree damage when compared to 29 conventional methods, but that at higher logging intensities this effect is negated. Changes in 30 aboveground biomass were negatively related to logging intensity, but any effect of RIL was 31 obscured by it being carried out at relatively low intensities. Tree richness appeared to initially 32 increase at low intensities but was reduced at higher intensities. 33 Discussion. Our results give only weak support to the hypothesis that RIL reduces the negative 34 impacts of logging on tree damage, and do not support suggestions that RIL reduces loss of biomass 35 or species richness. However, we do not think this is because there is no difference between the 36 impacts of RIL and conventional logging but rather that better evidence is needed to assess these 37 differences. We suggest that studies that take account of plot-level differences in logging intensity 38 are likely to provide a solution to this knowledge gap. 39
