Rayleigh-scattering calculations for the terrestrial atmosphere
TL;DR: The dispersion of the depolarization factor is shown to affect the Rayleigh phase function slightly, by approximately 1% in the forward, backscattered, and 90° scattering-angle directions.

Fairall,Timothy J. Garrett,James G. Hudson,Janet M. Intrieri,Christian Jakob,Tommy G. Jensen,Paul Lawson,D. Marcotte,Louis Nguyen,Peter Pilewskie,Arthur L. Rangno,D. C. Rogers,K. B. Strawbridge,Francisco P. J. Valero,Alastair G. Williams,Donald P. Wylie +26 more
TL;DR: The First ISCCP Regional Experiment (FIRE) Arctic Clouds Experiment was conducted in the Arctic during April through July, 1998 as mentioned in this paper, and the primary goal of the field experiment was to gather the data needed to examine the impact of arctic clouds on the radiation exchange between the surface, atmosphere, and space, and to study how the surface influences the evolution of boundary layer clouds.
Journal ArticleDOI
Airborne instruments to measure atmospheric aerosol particles, clouds and radiation: A cook's tour of mature and emerging technology
Darrel Baumgardner,J. L. Brenguier,Anthony Bucholtz,Hugh Coe,Paul J. DeMott,Timothy J. Garrett,Jean-François Gayet,M. Hermann,Andrew J. Heymsfield,Alexei Korolev,Martina Krämer,Andreas Petzold,Walter Strapp,Peter Pilewskie,Jonathan P. Taylor,Cynthia H. Twohy,Manfred Wendisch,William D. Bachalo,Patrick Y. Chuang +18 more
TL;DR: An overview of airborne systems for in situ measurements of aerosol particles, clouds and radiation that are currently in use on research aircraft around the world is presented in this paper, where the basic principles of operation and an extensive list of references for further reading is given.
Journal ArticleDOI
RACORO Extended-Term Aircraft Observations of Boundary Layer Clouds
Andrew M. Vogelmann,Greg M. McFarquhar,John A. Ogren,David D. Turner,Jennifer M. Comstock,Graham Feingold,Charles N. Long,Haflidi Jonsson,Anthony Bucholtz,Don R. Collins,Glenn S. Diskin,H. Gerber,R. McFarlane,Beat Schmid,Jason Tomlinson,Tami Toto +25 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors proposed a method to understand boundary-layer clouds and simulate them in general circulation models (GCM) to solve pressing scientific problems, such as cloud feedback and aerosol-cloud interactions.
Journal ArticleDOI
Atmospheric absorption during the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Enhanced Shortwave Experiment (ARESE)
Charles S. Zender,Brett C. Bush,Shelly K. Pope,Anthony Bucholtz,William D. Collins,Jeffrey T. Kiehl,Francisco P. J. Valero,John Vitko +7 more
TL;DR: In this article, a detailed model comparison to near-infrared and total solar flux time series observed by surface and airborne radiometric instruments during the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement Enhanced Shortwave Experiment (ARESE) campaign was conducted.
