A compilation of data on European flash floods
Eric Gaume,Valerie Bain,Pietro Bernardara,Olivier Newinger,Mihai Barbuc,Allen Bateman,Lotta Blaškovičová,Günter Blöschl,Marco Borga,Alexandru Dumitrescu,Ioannis N. Daliakopoulos,Joachim Garcia,Anisoara Irimescu,Silvia Kohnová,Aristeidis Koutroulis,Lorenzo Marchi,Simona Matreata,Vicente Medina,Emanuele Preciso,Daniel Sempere-Torres,G. Stancalie,Ján Szolgay,Ioannis K. Tsanis,David Velasco,Alberto Viglione +24 more
TL;DR: In this paper, an intensive data compilation has been carried out for seven European hydrometeorological regions to assess the possible ranges for peak discharges on watersheds with area smaller than 500 km2 and to describe the geography of the hazard across Europe.
Journal ArticleDOI
The threat of soil salinity: A European scale review
Ioannis N. Daliakopoulos,Ioannis K. Tsanis,Ioannis K. Tsanis,Aristeidis Koutroulis,Nektarios N. Kourgialas,A.E. Varouchakis,George P. Karatzas,Coen J. Ritsema +7 more
TL;DR: It is concluded that future research in the field of soil Salinisation should be focused on among others carbon dynamics of saline soil, further exploration of remote sensing of soil properties and the harmonization and enrichment of soil salinity maps across Europe within a general context of a soil threat monitoring system to support policies and strategies for the protection of European soils.
Journal ArticleDOI
Global terrestrial water storage and drought severity under climate change
Yadu Pokhrel,Farshid Felfelani,Yusuke Satoh,Yusuke Satoh,Julien Boulange,Peter Burek,Anne Gädeke,Dieter Gerten,Dieter Gerten,Simon N. Gosling,Manolis Grillakis,Lukas Gudmundsson,Naota Hanasaki,Hyungjun Kim,Aristeidis Koutroulis,Junguo Liu,Lamprini Papadimitriou,Jacob Schewe,Hannes Müller Schmied,Tobias Stacke,Camelia Eliza Telteu,Wim Thiery,Wim Thiery,Ted Veldkamp,Ted Veldkamp,Ted Veldkamp,Fang Zhao,Yoshihide Wada,Yoshihide Wada +28 more
TL;DR: In this article, using ensemble hydrological simulations, the authors show that climate change could reduce water storage in many regions, especially those in the Southern Hemisphere, and highlight the importance of climate change mitigation to avoid adverse water storage impacts and increased droughts.
Journal ArticleDOI
Challenges for drought assessment in the Mediterranean region under future climate scenarios
Yves Tramblay,Aristeidis Koutroulis,Luis Samaniego,Sergio M. Vicente-Serrano,Florence Volaire,Aaron Boone,Michel Le Page,Maria Carmen Llasat,Clément Albergel,Selmin Burak,Maxime Cailleret,Ksenija Cindrić Kalin,Hendrik Davi,Jean-Luc Dupuy,Peter Greve,Manolis Grillakis,Lahoucine Hanich,Lionel Jarlan,Nicolas Martin-StPaul,Jordi Martínez-Vilalta,Florent Mouillot,David Pulido-Velazquez,Pere Quintana-Seguí,Delphine Renard,Marco Turco,Murat Türkeş,Ricardo M. Trigo,Jean-Philippe Vidal,Alberto Vilagrosa,Mehrez Zribi,Jan Polcher +30 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors provide an overview of the key issues in research on climate change impacts on droughts, with a specific focus on the Mediterranean region, in order to: i) redefine more meaningful drought metrics tailored to the Mediterranean context, better take into account vegetation and its feedback on dunes, improve the modelling and forecasting of drought events through remote sensing and land surface models, and promote a more integrated vision of dunes taking into account both water availability and water use.
Journal ArticleDOI
Dryland changes under different levels of global warming.
TL;DR: New higher resolution climate projections by the HadGEM3A Atmosphere Global Climate Model using prescribed time varying SSTs and sea ice, provided by a range of CMIP5 climate models under RCP8.5 are examined to examine the benefit of the improved representation of atmospheric processes in the dryland research.
