Journal ArticleDOI
Thaulin-1: The first antimicrobial peptide isolated from the skin of a Patagonian frog Pleurodema thaul (Anura: Leptodactylidae: Leiuperinae) with activity against Escherichia coli.
Mariela M. Marani,Luis Orlando Perez,Alyne Rodrigues de Araújo,Alexandra Plácido,Carla F. Sousa,Patrick Veras Quelemes,Mayara Oliveira,Ana Georgina Gomes-Alves,Ana Georgina Gomes-Alves,Ana Georgina Gomes-Alves,Mariana Pueta,Paula Gameiro,Ana M. Tomás,Ana M. Tomás,Cristina Delerue-Matos,Peter Eaton,Peter Eaton,Silvia A. Camperi,Nestor Guillermo Basso,José Roberto S. A. Leite,José Roberto S. A. Leite,José Roberto S. A. Leite +21 more
TL;DR: Patagonia's biodiversity has been explored from many points of view, however, skin secretions of native amphibians have not been evaluated for antimicrobial peptide research until now and the first peptides described for amphibians of the Pleurodema genus are described.
Journal ArticleDOI
Interaction of polyphenols with model membranes: Putative implications to mouthfeel perception
Ana Reis,Sónia Soares,Carla F. Sousa,Ricardo Dias,Paula Gameiro,Susana Soares,Victor de Freitas +6 more
TL;DR: Spectroscopic data show that polyphenols interact to higher extent with more polar regions found in buccal, flour of the mouth and gingiva regions than with more hydrophobic regions located in the palate and tongue supporting that lipid microenvironments play a role in oral sensory perception.
Journal ArticleDOI
Ocellatin-PT antimicrobial peptides: High-resolution microscopy studies in antileishmania models and interactions with mimetic membrane systems.
Mayara Oliveira,Ana Georgina Gomes-Alves,Carla F. Sousa,Mariela M. Marani,Alexandra Plácido,Nuno Vale,Cristina Delerue-Matos,Paula Gameiro,Selma A S Kuckelhaus,Ana M. Tomás,José Roberto S. A. Leite,Peter Eaton +11 more
TL;DR: The results show selectivity of ocellatin‐PTs to the membranes of microorganisms and the applicability of biophysical methods to clarify the interaction of AMPs with cell membranes.
Journal ArticleDOI
The binding of free and copper-complexed fluoroquinolones to OmpF porins: an experimental and molecular docking study
Carla F. Sousa,João Coimbra,Inês Gomes,Inês Gomes,Ricardo Franco,Pedro A. Fernandes,Paula Gameiro +6 more
TL;DR: The findings of this work provide insights that will be helpful to proceed with the study of metal-complexes as alternatives to free fluoroquinolones in resistant infections, avoiding the high-cost and time-consuming processes of discovering and designing new antibiotics.
Journal ArticleDOI
Interactions of a non-fluorescent fluoroquinolone with biological membrane models: A multi-technique approach
TL;DR: Similar Kp values for sparfloxacin or its copper-complex were obtained for the absorption and fluorescence quenching methods confirming the usefulness of a multi-technique approach and suggesting that in contrast to other fluoroquinolones hydrophobic diffusion occurs readily for both of these molecules.
