Journal ArticleDOI
18F-Fluoride Signal Amplification Identifies Microcalcifications Associated With Atherosclerotic Plaque Instability in Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography Images.
Michael D. Creager,Tobias Hohl,Joshua D. Hutcheson,Alastair J Moss,Florian Schlotter,Mark C. Blaser,Mi-Ae Park,Lang H Lee,Sasha A Singh,Carlos J. Alcaide-Corral,Adriana Tavares,David E. Newby,Marie Foley Kijewski,Masanori Aikawa,Marcelo F. Di Carli,Marc R. Dweck,Elena Aikawa +16 more
TL;DR: The results suggest that 18F-fluoride PET signal in PET-positive, CT-negative regions of human atherosclerotic plaques is the result of developing microcalcifications, and high surface area in regions of small microCalcifications may amplify PET signal.
Journal ArticleDOI
The Global Threat of Outdoor Ambient Air Pollution to Cardiovascular Health: Time for Intervention
TL;DR: While lifestyle changes or medications such as statins might be viable approaches, accruing evidence supports several low-risk inexpensive interventions capable of reducing “personallevel” PM2.5 exposures and improving surrogate markers of cardiovascular health.
Journal ArticleDOI
Incidence, Microbiology, and Outcomes in Patients Hospitalized With Infective Endocarditis
Anoop S V Shah,Anoop S V Shah,David A. McAllister,Peter J. Gallacher,Federica Astengo,Jesus A. Rodriguez Perez,Jennifer Hall,Kuan Ken Lee,Rong Bing,Atul Anand,Dilip Nathwani,Nicholas L. Mills,Nicholas L. Mills,David E. Newby,Charis Marwick,Nicholas L. Cruden +15 more
TL;DR: Despite changes in antibiotic prophylaxis guidelines, the crude incidence of infective endocarditis has remained stable, however, the incidence rate in patients >80 years of age has doubled, particularly in the elderly.
Journal ArticleDOI
The Study to Understand Mortality and Morbidity in COPD (SUMMIT) study protocol
Jørgen Vestbo,Julie A. Anderson,Robert D. Brook,Peter M.A. Calverley,Bartolome R. Celli,Courtney Crim,Brett Haumann,Fernando J. Martinez,Julie C. Yates,David E. Newby +9 more
TL;DR: The “Study to Understand Mortality and Morbidity in COPD” (SUMMIT) aims at determining the impact of fluticasone furoate/vilanterol combination and the individual components on the survival of patients with moderate COPD and either a history of CVD or at increased risk for CVD.
Journal ArticleDOI
High-Sensitivity Cardiac Troponin I and Clinical Risk Scores in Patients With Suspected Acute Coronary Syndrome.
Andrew R. Chapman,Kerrick Hesse,Jack P.M. Andrews,Kuan Ken Lee,Atul Anand,Anoop S V Shah,Dennis Sandeman,Amy V. Ferry,Jack Jameson,Simran Piya,Stacey Stewart,Lucy Marshall,Fiona E. Strachan,Alasdair Gray,David E. Newby,Nicholas L. Mills +15 more
TL;DR: Clinical risk scores significantly improved the safety of the European Society of Cardiology 3-hour pathway, which relies on a single cardiac troponin threshold at the 99th percentile to rule in and rule out myocardial infarction.
