Journal ArticleDOI
High-sensitivity troponin I concentrations are a marker of an advanced hypertrophic response and adverse outcomes in patients with aortic stenosis
Calvin W. L. Chin,Anoop S V Shah,David A. McAllister,S. Joanna Cowell,Shirjel Alam,Jeremy P. Langrish,Fiona E. Strachan,Amanda Hunter,Anna Maria Choy,Chim C. Lang,Simon Walker,Nicholas A. Boon,David E. Newby,Nicholas L. Mills,Marc R. Dweck +14 more
TL;DR: In patients with aortic stenosis, plasma cTnI concentration is associated with advanced hypertrophy and replacement myocardial fibrosis as well as AVR or cardiovascular death.
Journal ArticleDOI
Influence of the Menstrual Cycle, Pregnancy, and Preeclampsia on Arterial Stiffness
Amy O. Robb,Nicholas L. Mills,Jehangir N. Din,Imogen B. J. Smith,Finny P. Paterson,David E. Newby,Fiona C. Denison +6 more
TL;DR: It is concluded that systemic arterials stiffness undergoes major changes during the menstrual cycle and pregnancy and that preeclampsia is associated with greater and more prolonged increases in arterial stiffness.
Journal ArticleDOI
Left ventricular remodeling and hypertrophy in patients with aortic stenosis: insights from cardiovascular magnetic resonance
Marc R. Dweck,Sanjiv Joshi,Timothy Murigu,Ankur Gulati,Francisco Alpendurada,Andrew Jabbour,Alicia M. Maceira,Isabelle Roussin,D B Northridge,Philip J. Kilner,Stuart A. Cook,Nicholas A. Boon,John Pepper,Raad H. Mohiaddin,David E. Newby,Dudley J. Pennell,Sanjay K Prasad +16 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that in patients with moderate and severe aortic stenosis, the pattern of LV adaption and degree of hypertrophy do not closely correlate with the severity of valve narrowing and that asymmetric patterns of wall thickening are common.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effect of metformin on maternal and fetal outcomes in obese pregnant women (EMPOWaR): a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial
Carolyn Chiswick,Rebecca M. Reynolds,Fiona C. Denison,Amanda J. Drake,Shareen Forbes,David E. Newby,Brian R. Walker,Siobhan Quenby,Susan Wray,Andrew Weeks,Hany Lashen,Aryelly Rodriguez,Gordon D Murray,Sonia Whyte,Jane E. Norman +14 more
TL;DR: Metformin has no significant effect on birthweight percentile in obese pregnant women, and further follow-up of babies born to mothers in the EMPOWaR study will identify longer-term outcomes of metformin.
Journal ArticleDOI
Particle Traps Prevent Adverse Vascular and Prothrombotic Effects of Diesel Engine Exhaust Inhalation in Men
Andrew J. Lucking,Magnus Lundbäck,Stefan Barath,Nicholas L. Mills,Manjit K. Sidhu,Jeremy P. Langrish,Nicholas A. Boon,Jamshid Pourazar,Juan J. Badimon,Miriam E. Gerlofs-Nijland,Flemming R. Cassee,Christoffer Boman,Ken Donaldson,Thomas Sandström,David E. Newby,Anders Blomberg +15 more
TL;DR: With a range of surrogate measures, the use of a particle trap prevents several adverse cardiovascular effects of exhaust inhalation in men and widespread use of particle traps on diesel-powered vehicles may have substantial public health benefits and reduce the burden of cardiovascular disease.
