Journal ArticleDOI
Adverse health effects associated with household air pollution: a systematic review, meta-analysis, and burden estimation study.
Kuan Ken Lee,Rong Bing,Joanne Kiang,Sophia Bashir,Nick Spath,Dominik Stelzle,Kevin Mortimer,Anda Bularga,Dimitrios Doudesis,Shruti S Joshi,Fiona E. Strachan,Sophie Gumy,Heather Adair-Rohani,Engi F. Attia,Michael H Chung,Mark R. Miller,David E. Newby,Nicholas L. Mills,David A. McAllister,Anoop S V Shah +19 more
TL;DR: The burden of cardiorespiratory, paediatric, and maternal diseases associated with household air pollution has declined worldwide but remains high in the world's poorest regions, especially in LMICs.
Journal ArticleDOI
High-Sensitivity Cardiac Troponin, Statin Therapy, and Risk of Coronary Heart Disease
Ian Ford,Anoop S V Shah,Ruiqi Zhang,Ruiqi Zhang,David A. McAllister,Fiona E. Strachan,Muriel J. Caslake,David E. Newby,Chris J. Packard,Nicholas L. Mills +9 more
TL;DR: Serial troponin measurements have major potential to assess cardiovascular risk and monitor the impact of therapeutic interventions and change at 1 year is associated with future coronary risk independent of cholesterol lowering.
Journal ArticleDOI
Smooth Muscle Enriched Long Noncoding RNA (SMILR) Regulates Cell Proliferation
Margaret D. Ballantyne,Karine Pinel,Rachel S. Dakin,Alex T. Vesey,Louise A. Diver,Ruth M. Mackenzie,Raquel Garcia,Paul Welsh,Naveed Sattar,Graham Hamilton,Nikhil Joshi,Marc R. Dweck,Joseph M. Miano,Martin W. McBride,David E. Newby,Robert A. McDonald,Andrew H. Baker +16 more
TL;DR: The results identify SMILR as a driver of vascular smooth muscle cell proliferation and suggest that modulation of SMilR may be a novel therapeutic strategy to reduce vascular pathologies.
Journal ArticleDOI
Increased platelet activation in patients with stable and acute exacerbation of COPD
John D. Maclay,David A. McAllister,Shonna Johnston,Jennifer Raftis,Catherine McGuinnes,Andrew Deans,David E. Newby,Nicholas L. Mills,William MacNee +8 more
TL;DR: Patients with stable COPD have increased circulating platelet-monocyte aggregates compared with well-matched controls and this findings identify a novel mechanism to explain the increased cardiovascular risk in COPD and suggest platelet inhibition as a plausible therapeutic target.
Journal ArticleDOI
Persistent Long-Term Structural, Functional, and Metabolic Changes After Stress-Induced (Takotsubo) Cardiomyopathy
Caroline Scally,Amelia Rudd,Alice Mezincescu,Heather M. Wilson,Janaki Srivanasan,Graham W. Horgan,Paul Broadhurst,David E. Newby,Anke Henning,Dana Dawson +9 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that after takotsubo cardiomyopathy, patients develop a persistent, long-term heart failure phenotype.
