Deposits of clastic carbonate-dominated (calciclastic) sedimentary slope systems in the rock record have been identified mostly as linearly-consistent carbonate apron deposits, even though most ancient clastic carbonate slope deposits fit the submarine fan systems better. Calciclastic submarine fans are consequently rarely described and are poorly understood. Subsequently, very little is known especially in mud-dominated calciclastic submarine fan systems. Presented in this study are a sedimentological core and petrographic characterisation of samples from eleven boreholes from the Lower Carboniferous of Bowland Basin (Northwest England) that reveals a >250 m thick calciturbidite complex deposited in a calciclastic submarine fan setting. Seven facies are recognised from core and thin section characterisation and are grouped into three carbonate turbidite sequences. They include: 1) Calciturbidites, comprising mostly of highto low-density, wavy-laminated bioclast-rich facies; 2) low-density densite mudstones which are characterised by planar laminated and unlaminated muddominated facies; and 3) Calcidebrites which are muddy or hyper-concentrated debrisflow deposits occurring as poorly-sorted, chaotic, mud-supported floatstones. Fluorine in pharmaceutical industry: fluorine-containing drugs introduced to the market in the last decade (2001-2011).

Interest in catalysis by metal nanoparticles (NPs) is increasing dramatically, as reflected by the large number of publications in the last five years. This field, "semi-heterogeneous catalysis", is at the frontier between homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis, and progress has been made in the efficiency and selectivity of reactions and recovery and recyclability of the catalytic materials. Usually NP catalysts are prepared from a metal salt, a reducing agent, and a stabilizer and are supported on an oxide, charcoal, or a zeolite. Besides the polymers and oxides that used to be employed as standard, innovative stabilizers, media, and supports have appeared, such as dendrimers, specific ligands, ionic liquids, surfactants, membranes, carbon nanotubes, and a variety of oxides. Ligand-free procedures have provided remarkable results with extremely low metal loading. The Review presents the recent developments and the use of NP catalysis in organic synthesis, for example, in hydrogenation and C--C coupling reactions, and the heterogeneous oxidation of CO on gold NPs.

Water in Organocatalytic Process: Debunking the Myths

Probing catalyst systems for a nonlinear relationship between product enantioselectivity and catalyst enantiopurity is now commonly being used as a mechanistic tool. We show that in some cases striking consequences for reaction rate can ensue for reactions carried out using non-enantiopure catalysts. We also demonstrate how consideration of the kinetic behavior may serve to enhance the use of nonlinear effects as a diagnostic tool for identifying active catalytic species and for providing mechanistic insight. Kinetic information may also help in the development of efficient synthetic strategies using non-enantiopure systems.

Kinetic Aspects of Nonlinear Effects in Asymmetric Catalysis

The observation of single chirality in biological systems has intrigued scientists for more than one hundred years. Here we discuss several recent experimental studies showing amplification of enantiomeric excess based on amino acid phase behavior. Comparing observations of solution–solid and gas–solid phase transitions highlights the underlying fundamental physical chemistry principles that rationalize the observed enantioenrichment in both cases.

Spoilt for Choice: Assessing Phase Behavior Models for the Evolution of Homochirality

Detailed kinetic studies on the functionalization of unactivated hydrocarbon sp3 C-H bonds by dirhodium-catalyzed reaction of aryldiazoacetates revealed that the C-H functionalization step is rate-determining. The efficiency of this step was increased by using the hydrocarbon as solvent and using donor/acceptor carbenes with an electron-withdrawing substituent on the aryl donor group. The optimum catalyst for these reactions is the tetraphenylphthalimido derivative Rh2(R-TPPTTL)4 and a further beneficial refinement was obtained by using N,N'-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide as an additive. Under the optimum conditions with a catalyst loading of 0.001 mol %, effective enantioselective C-H functionalization (66-97% yield, 83-97% ee) was achieved of cycloalkanes with a range of aryldiazoacetates as long as the aryldiazoacetate was not to sterically demanding. The reaction with cyclohexane using a catalyst loading of 0.0005 mol % could be recharged twice with additional aryldiazoacetate, resulting in an overall dirhodium catalyst turnover number of 580,000.
