TL;DR: Depending on the severity of resource limitations among hospitals around the world and the prevailing COVID-19 burden, it may be crucial to prioritize the LARCs for exenterative-type surgical resections, beyond total mesorectal excision planes (bTME).
Journal ArticleDOI
Negative pressure wound therapy does not decrease postoperative wound complications in patients undergoing mastectomy and flap fixation
L. de Rooij,S. M. J. van Kuijk,E. R. M. van Haaren,Alfred Janssen,Yvonne L. J. Vissers,Geerard L. Beets,Geerard L. Beets,J. van Bastelaar +7 more
TL;DR: Avelle negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) is a promising technique for preventing wound complications after skin closure in elective surgery as discussed by the authors, however, it does not lead to fewer patients requiring unplanned visits or fewer patients developing clinically significant seromas.
Journal ArticleDOI
Prevalence of nodal involvement in rectal cancer after chemoradiotherapy
Hester E. Haak,Hester E. Haak,Geerard L. Beets,Geerard L. Beets,Koen C.M.J. Peeters,Patricia J. Nelemans,V. Valentini,Claus Rödel,Li Jen Kuo,Felipe A. Beets-Tan,Monique Maas +20 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the prevalence of nodal metastases (ypN+) status according to ypT category in patients with locally advanced rectal cancer treated with chemoradiotherapy and total mesorectal excision, and assessed the impact of ypN+ on disease recurrence and survival by pooled analysis of individual-patient data.
Journal ArticleDOI
Monitoring early changes in rectal tumor morphology and volume during 5 weeks of preoperative chemoradiotherapy : An evaluation with sequential MRIs
Doenja M. J. Lambregts,Ahmed Bani Yassien,Max J. Lahaye,Anja Betgen,Monique Maas,Geerard L. Beets,Geerard L. Beets,Uulke A. van der Heide,Baukelien van Triest,Regina G. H. Beets-Tan,Regina G. H. Beets-Tan +10 more
TL;DR: Results of this exploratory pilot study suggest that changes in rectal tumor morphology (fibrosis) and volume can already be observed early during radiation, both when measured quantitatively and when assessed visually.
Journal ArticleDOI
Perineal wound closure using gluteal turnover flap or primary closure after abdominoperineal resection for rectal cancer: study protocol of a randomised controlled multicentre trial (BIOPEX-2 study)

TL;DR: The uncomplicated perineal wound healing rate is expected to increase from 65 to 85% by using the gluteal turnover flap, and with proven effectiveness, a quick implementation of this relatively simple surgical technique isexpected to take place.
