A ring system detected around the centaur (10199) chariklo

Felipe Braga-Ribas, +71 more
- 03 Apr 2014 -
TL;DR: Observations of a multichord stellar occultation revealed the presence of a ring system around (10199) Chariklo, which is a Centaur—that is, one of a class of small objects orbiting primarily between Jupiter and Neptune—with an equivalent radius of 124 9 kilometres.
Journal ArticleDOI

Albedo and atmospheric constraints of dwarf planet Makemake from a stellar occultation

TL;DR: The disappearances and reappearances of the star were abrupt, showing that Makemake has no global Pluto-like atmosphere at an upper limit of 4–12 nanobar (1σ) for the surface pressure, although a localized atmosphere is possible.
Journal ArticleDOI

Nuclear magnitudes and the size distribution of Jupiter family comets

TL;DR: Tancredi et al. as discussed by the authors presented a new catalog of absolute nuclear magnitudes of Jupiter family (JF) comets, which is an updated version of our previous catalog, and derived a cumulative size distribution that follows a power-law of index − 2.3.
Journal ArticleDOI

The size, shape, albedo, density, and atmospheric limit of transneptunian object (50000) quaoar from multi-chord stellar occultations

TL;DR: Braga Ribas et al. as discussed by the authors proposed a method to improve the quality of the data collected by the data collection system of the government of Brazil, using data from the Ministerio de Ciencia, Tecnologia e Innovacao.
Journal ArticleDOI

A comparison between methods to compute lyapunov exponents

TL;DR: This paper points out a problem that can appear when the two-particle method is used, which can lead to a false estimation of a positive LCE, and presents some suggestions to be taken into account when this method has to be used.
